Okay, this is sparked by a post from alliecat8. (And I could have sworn I responded to the post, but I don't see my reply. Huh. I did type something, and it appeared to have gone through. *iz confused*) Anyway ( Read more... )

I don't think you're overanalyzing at all! I've noticed the same thing with the shows that I follow; one bad (to me) pairing, or the dissolution of a favorite pairing, and I go out the window. Thank God for cable and entire seasons of 90's television on DVD!

I just feel so shallow, though! I used to think that I just liked the shows for their storytelling, not just for the relationships. Apparently that isn't the case.

I shamelessly admit that the relationships form a huge part of the interest for me, and that I never met a storyline that didn't benefit from a little UST here and there. You're totally right about "Law and Order" not needing that kind of subtext because it's so completely plot-driven, but all my favorite shows have ongoing themes running in the background that keep me hooked. I sometimes feel shallow too, but oh well, at least I'm not watching "General Hospital" any more!

Hee! You watched General Hospital as well? I watched in high school and a bit my freshman year of college. (So, that would be 89-94.) Soaps are sometimes on during lunch break at work and I wonder what I ever could have seen in them!

I agree about the ongoing themes in the background thing. I think I (now) like my shows as complex as possible.

I'm sure you're watching Lost at the moment. I would, but I'm not allowed to because Dana hasn't seen the last episode yet and forbid me from watching this one as she is in the house and doesn't want to be spoiled. It's especially hard because I stay as spoiler-free as humanly possible, but I know there is big stuff coming up and I want details ASAP!

I watched the first episoded of PB, but have missed all of the ones since the hiatus. I really need to find the time (where? when? *sigh*) to sit down and have a PB marathon, because I do/did enjoy the show.

if it is my problem with the lack of het romance, I think I'm screwed with either show*g* It's funny because the presence of het relationships never was a reason to watch a show for me, nor the presence of slash, or subtext, to be honest. On the contrary, usually canon relationships puts me off because writers tend to be unable to write relationships well ( ... )

I actually think that is a main part of my problem with WaT. If the Sam/Martin relationship had stayed subtext/out of canon, I would have been fine. The show, however, made the relationship canon and fucked it up. That leaves me with little hope.

actually I'm happy for the lack of a relationship between them also because I think it screwed up needlessly a friendship that was fresh and good to see
Um, yeah, I should have read the whole comment before posting, but I'll leave the comment I made above. Yup, that is how I feel. The relationship as written screwed up their friendship (and eliminated my joy in the subtext).

my problem with the show is the decline in the writing, but it had already started in season 3 and gone very bad this season where most of the cases feel disjointed and without direction and the personal story lines (especially Jack's) are removed from the cases, plus Elena really screwed up the ( ... )

I don't watch Lost, but i think the loss of interest in Without a Trace is also because the show used to be better. I fell in love with the show (and Danny) after Wannabe because it was such an intense and great episode. My love for Martin/Sam came after i started watching. I think the first season is the best season and there's almost no Martin/Sam. Actually there's a lot of Jack/Sam, which is a ship that i hate, but still the show was amazing. So i think the show reached a point where is not that interesting anymore but the only thing that keeps you hooked is the hope of some interaction between your favorite couple. Without a Trace is still my favorite show, but mostly because of Martin/Sam and because my other favorite shows are also getting worse. I want to see what season 5 brings. If it ends up being worse than this one or if i get the feeling that there is no chance for MS again, i might seriously stop watching. Sad. =/

I think I like the second season best, but only by a hair. I actually didn't mind the Jack/Sam stuff, because it didn't interfere with my Martin/Sam thoughts. What messed me up is that they took the relationship out of the subtext, made it canon, and then screwed it up such that they don't even have the same great platonic relationship that they had before.

And, yes, the writing/stories has/have gone downhill as well. I, as you, consider it to be one of my favorite shows still, but only because the competition isn't that stiff. I really hope that the show hasn't changed so much that it can't get back to the way it used to be. I won't stop watching just because there isn't a real chance for M/S, but my enjoyment level just isn't there at the present moment. Who knows. Maybe all it will take is a run of really good episodes next season and I'll forget all of my complaints. (Hey, I can hope, can't I?)

I also think the priority has to be the storylines of the cases, after all it is a procedural drama, not romance. We need those episodes that blows you away, those heartwrenching episodes that makes you feel that lump in your throat without being overly dramatic which is my biggest fear. WaT seems to be falling in the melodrama to actually extract some kind of emotion from the viewer, which didn't happen before. If they can go back to doing those powerful but without being soapy eps, than yeah, i'm satisfied. Still i want them to fix the whole MS situation, then i'll be totally and completely happy. I didn't like the way TPTB handled MS's relationship after they got together, but i still want them to become an item again. I just want the whole thing to be done right. *sighs*

I think season 2 is almost as good as season 1. My 2 all-time favorite WaT episodes are from season 2 (Wannabe and Two Families), but overall i think i prefer season 1. ;)
