I actually think that is a main part of my problem with WaT. If the Sam/Martin relationship had stayed subtext/out of canon, I would have been fine. The show, however, made the relationship canon and fucked it up. That leaves me with little hope.
actually I'm happy for the lack of a relationship between them also because I think it screwed up needlessly a friendship that was fresh and good to see
Um, yeah, I should have read the whole comment before posting, but I'll leave the comment I made above. Yup, that is how I feel. The relationship as written screwed up their friendship (and eliminated my joy in the subtext).
my problem with the show is the decline in the writing, but it had already started in season 3 and gone very bad this season where most of the cases feel disjointed and without direction and the personal story lines (especially Jack's) are removed from the cases, plus Elena really screwed up the balance.
This is true as well, looking back on it. As I told Ross above, I've realized that my favorite/most fannish shows were the ones in which I was hooked by the characters and by the plots, so let downs in either are disturbing, but let downs in both (as I see taking place in WaT) is tragic. There are some really good episodes from S3 and S4, but even the ones I really liked had some issues. It's also not like there were that many dreadful ones, but it doesn't seem like the majority of the regular episodes are at the same level of the S1 and S2 eps. I remember in voting for S3 survivor that I had a big problem with the eps that weren't dreadful or great because there were so many of them and they were just, meh.
And you know I agree with you about the way personal story lines have been handled. I am of the "less is more" camp, which apparently is not true of the writers these last couple of seasons. I loved finding out little tidbits as either throwaway comments to cases or little asides between co-workers, or slight similarities, or what-have-you. Having personal storylines dropped on my head like an anvil (Elena in "Honor Bound" for example) and/or not tying in well with the main storyline (can't choose an example at the present momet) makes me sad as to the state of the show.
It's the same with Lost, I love Sawyer very much, but I don't want to see him in a relationship, het or homo, but in this case it's mostly because I can't seem to see either the text or the subtext...
To me, Sawyer just oozes sex, so I can potentially see relatioships with most anyone. Kate? Yup. Shannon? Yup. Jack? Yup. Sayid? Read some of that too. He's my little manwhore. *grin*
As far as Martin and Danny's characters go... I'm actually okay with how Martin has been treated this season. Dispite the cliche-ed-ness of the pill storyline, I like how they made it work for him. It's a bit uncomfortable for my escapist television viewing (did I mention that I've just seen "The Little Things"?), but fairly well done. I can buy it with what I know of his character, and it has been developed slowly and consistently. I don't like the Danny stuff that much. As you said, it's really inconsistant. One minute he has PTSD, and the next, he doesn't? Also, you well know that I like my characters to be a bit mysterious and intriguing, so there is that issue as well.
