Okay, this is sparked by a post from alliecat8. (And I could have sworn I responded to the post, but I don't see my reply. Huh. I did type something, and it appeared to have gone through. *iz confused*) Anyway...

She asked why het is problematic on Lost, and in responding to her, I realized that my interest in Lost has waned with my loss of interest in Sawyer/Kate. I do like Jack/Sawyer, so it's not like I'm only invested in the Sawyer/Kate relationship, which made me think at first that the two couldn't be related. Then I realized that my interest in Without a Trace has also waned this season, and I can't help but think it's at least a little due to the fact that there is no more Samantha/Martin anymore.

I used to wonder how certain shippers could say that as soon as there was no chance of their couple doing anything in canon that they would stop watching the show. I always thought that the show was so much more than that. I mean, I've watched a bunch of shows in which there was no chance of romance on the show (Law and Order: SVU and Cold Case spring immediately to mind) and had/have no problem with it, so why would it matter for other shows? Apparently it does. *sigh* Maybe it's just that I need at least one strong/complex man that I like and one strong/complex woman that I like and that they have a potential for het romance even if it isn't ever going to really happen? Maybe even if nothing ever happens, I'm fine, but if the possibility is quashed (either through a deterioration in the quality of either character (as in the case of Lost) or due to the relationship fizzling out (as in the case of Without a Trace)), my interest level starts to go downhill?

I don't know, but I wish that it didn't matter to me. Maybe I'm overanalyzing and it really doesn't matter and it's really a drop in the quality of storytelling this season for both shows? I'd prefer that, because if that were the case, I could hope for an upswing in quality, but if it is my problem with the lack of het romance, I think I'm screwed with either show.

Thus ends my rambling for this evening.
