So, once again it has been a while. This time it isn't entirely my fault for being strictly lurky as the computer woes of February/March are only now completely resolved.
All in all I am reasonably impressed with Dell. It took a long time, mostly due to the fact that I can't check my e-mail at work, that procedures are procedures and that I am by no

I bought Brethren fully expecting a nice, diverting read and ended up rush ordering Matelots because I was so emotionally invested in the characters. ::grin:: And I see that I'm not the only one waiting for the next volume. There are so many passages that I love that I finally wrote the page numbers down so that I have something wonderful to thumb through from time to time. I love W.A. Hoffman's writing. It's quite and detailed and then when I least expect it she makes an observation that just rings through me. ::checks Amazon just one more time to see if Treasure is ready to be ordered ( ... )

I squee about RBW as often as possible and try to spread the pirate love, but it isn't easy! I have converted my sister and her sister-in-law, as well as my niece. I have been impatiently waiting for Treasures since last May (after waiting very impatiently for Matelots (for MONTHS!). I have a tag in my journal for it (pirates!) if you want to see what I have said previously.
Torchwood = love. This was the first time I posted about it, but I have been a fan since the begining, and a Doctor Who fan since the 1980's and the Tom Baker Doctor. I have only recently started on the Jack/Ianto fic so if you know any really good ones let me know!
Have to rush back to work (lunch break just isn't long enough...grrr!), talk to you soon!

I discovered Torchwood first through Jack/Ianto fanfiction and then started watching the show and only recently watched a handful of Dr. Who episodes with Jack in them. Torchwood especially swings wildly back and forth between B-movie good fun and pathos (Cyberwoman stands out for that) and so I still don't feel like I have a handle on it and yet I eagerly awaited every episode.
I was going to say that there aren't that many really good Torchwood fics out there but I'm happy to take it back. I got almost all of my favorite Torchwood stories from fairyd123's RecPage and some from crack_van. I especially liked:
Wide Open Space by rivier
Whiskey by notevery
Quantum Is Just a Fancy Word for Hell If I Know by lyra_wing
Brilliant Illusions by nessaja82
Lost and Found by kaneko Great use of absurd details.
Between the Shores by misslucyjane
Sun In the Sky by giddygeek
Broader Than the Flood also by giddygeek Love Owen's, "Girls - and that includes you, Jack..."
On the Way to the Harbour - 657 Miles by slippery_fish Easily one of my favorites.

Doctor Who and Torchwood are very different, and target very different audiences. Doctor Who has always been that quirky brit sci-fi humor that is targeting a family audience. Torchwood, while a spin off, is exclusively for adults and missing that almost over the top quirky humor. I love them both, but for completely different reasons.
I will NEVER read Doctor Who fanfiction though, because it is too tied in to semi-sacred memories from long pre-internet and I don't want anything to mess with that. I am that way about a lot of things from pre-internet. Like you with Torchwood, I started in many of the fandoms I have followed through the fiction first (Due South, Mag7, Without a Trace etc. etc.) and I kind of prefer it that way.
