Life is not easy for a genius such as Joshua. He would have had a brilliant future as an artist, Lords and Bishops and Kings had actually been interested in buying his art. Good Lord, Italian experts had wanted to discuss with him his views on anatomy, the boy was gifted.

But his family, his religious heritage had made him lose almost everything. He had even had to give up his real name to try and make enough money to put bread on the table.

Dekel had traveled a long way. He'd gone through several horses and a couple of squires too. He'd had fights along the way, and spent a lot of his money trying to find suitable places to sleep: He didn't like to be out in the open while he was resting. Fortunately, he could always get more money, and when he had that everything else was easy to obtain.

And now he finally found himself out in the Tuscan fields, asking house to house for a great artist that he had heard lives out there. But everyone was denying the young man's existence, not even money seemed to sway their memories.

Coming up to a barn, he swung his horse as he saw a man working nearby. He'd keep on asking until he got a lead.

Signing his art again left a sour taste in his mouth. Some people still recognised his personal style, no matter how much he tried to chance his tendencies, to experiment. No matter if he had chosen now a new name to leave a mark behind.

Il Greco wasn't using his real name, why couldn't he come up with a name of his own? Scud. It didn't mean nothing, but that's what he had been seeking for. No meaning behind a name, no religion or sin behind his back.

Unfortunately, that also meant his art had no fame but shame on it. It barely paid for a place to sleep, for something to eat or a drink.

"Hey!" Dekel rounded on his horse, stopping side on so that he could shout down to the man in the field. "You, peasant!"

He waited until he thought that he had his attention. "Do you know of any artists around here? I'm looking for a visionary that I've heard of, a man that goes by the name of Joshua."

Another pause, and then he disturbed the coin purse on his belt, making the coins clink. "I'll pay for information."

As soon as Joshua noticed a horse was approaching, he covered the small piece he was working on. By the time the man was close enough to see what he was doing, the boy had even hid his tools.

He was surprised to hear his own name, it had been a while since someone had looked for him, for better or worse. But, as promising as those coins were, they could be also dangerous.

"What do you want from him?"

This man was a mistery. He didn't look like someone's servant judging the luxuries on his clothes and the beast he was riding. But he was doing his own work? There had to be a trick behind this. "I might know something."

Dekel took in the young man: He was old enough that he should be married off, working the fields all day to feed the handful of kids that he'd surely already produced. And yet, for all his roughness, behind the hair and dirt, the torn clothes, this man didn't look like he spend all day in the sun. His skin wasn't tough and littered with fine creases, his hands didn't look cracked and worn.

... And there was no way that this scruff had money.

"And you might know nothing..." he adjusted his clothes to cover his purse, as if he didn't believe the boy had any answers he'd want to hear.

"Believe what you want." Joshua pointed out with confidence. He was old enough to know what he was doing, but he was young enough to still act like a fool. "You are the one who will lose his time, my Lord."

He tried again. "What is it that you want from him?"

Beneath him, Dekel's horse shifted a few steps, clearly bored with this endeavor, even if the rider was only just starting to get interested. He tugged on the reigns to get her to stay still again. Silly mare, it was time to find a new horse, perhaps.

"I heard of his genius while I was in France, and I haven't stopped thinking about him since." France had been a whim, as had coming here. "I hear that he could rival Leonardo in some of his crafts. I only want to meet him."

He smiled, as pleasantly as he could.

Each breath made his chest rise, but all Joshua could feel was that this gentle Lord's words were truly filling him with pride. It had been a long time since someone had openly appreciated his work. He had been merely a boy since the last time someone had actually looked for him.

But time had taught him to be careful.

"Those are kind words, good sir. But those who talk kindly of him usually persecute him short after." Joshua was not as tense as before though. There was something about this man. He could see true interest in him, not orders to follow. "Are you aware of his beliefs?"

He nodded at his words of persecution. He had heard about that, he had heard a lot of things by now - he'd traveled a long way and a long time.

"I am aware of that. Perhaps I could offer him some shelter, sanctuary, if he finds that pleasing? I am sure that whatever his beliefs, they will not matter to me."

He paused, his gaze wandering over the surroundings, over the cloth covered items. "Some say that I am godless."

There was a time when Joshua might have felt disgust as words such as the ones this man had just dared to pronounce. But not now. Not when one man's God was the reason another man lost it all. Not when his craft had never been as free as when it stopped following the church's rules.

Still unsure, Joshua stood up. Whoever this gentleman was, he wanted to believe in him.i "Your journey has come to an end then."

The smile did nothing but grow as the young man stood up. It wasn't the first time people had said that they were the man he was looking for though, a little money and people suddenly believe that they can pull stars down from the sky to paint with.

They can't. And it soon shows. But Dekel has a feeling that this one might be telling the truth.

He dismounts and leads his horse to a post to tie her up. Slowly he makes his was back, checking himself as he walks.

"You'll forgive me if I ask for proof?"

"That would only be understandable." He uses as much courtesy as his sharp tongue might allow him, the sound of that bag, heavy with coins, sounding like music in Joshua's ears.

"You must keep in mind that I have merely started working on this piece." He mumbled as he revealed the icon. For something with barely a little work, the composition and details were exquisit. "I have other pieces stored if you want further proof."

He's waiting expectantly, resisting the urge to pull the cloth away himself. He's used to getting what he wants, but he knows to be patient and not pushy. When the piece is revealed he can't help but make a murmur of appreciation, and its genuine.

"This is the most beautiful thing I have ever set my eyes on." He's glancing at Joshua when he says it, though. "And it's not even reached it's full potential yet."

"I believe you." A smile plays around his lips. "But I'd still like to see everything you can show me."

Joshua is about to argue, even if a pleased smile graces his lips at the compliment. But then, he notices where the man's eyes are set. He is not sure if he should feel proud or insulted, but the richman solves his dilemma by clearly showing interest in his other work.

"I am afraid you will have to wait, sir, for I do not have most of my work in my possession right now." The few people he trusted, they kept his art safe. Dangerous expressions lead to the end of a young life, after all.

"The pieces I have with me are small, mostly sketches." He tilted his head. "That is what you traveled so far for? A private viewing?"
