CHAPTER NINE

“We said ‘I love you’!”

“You what!?!”

Callie laughed to herself as her long distance best friend completely squealed over the phone. She was pretty sure that her unedited response was high pitched enough to permanently damage her hearing over the 2k threshold. She had been lying on the couch waiting for Erica to come home from her late night shift from the hospital. Watching mindless television without her lover turned out to be quite dull without Erica’s constant dry commentary so she just turned it off. After weighing her options, a phone call to her long distance best friend seemed the most appropriate thing to do.

“Oh my god Addison, are you trying to permanently damage my hearing?” Callie teased, “You heard what I said…”

“Callie, that’s awesome. I’m so happy for you. See!!! What’d I tell you a few weeks ago? She loves you. It was written all over her face.”

“Okay, okay… You were totally right.” Callie sighed, thinking about the dark place she had been in only a few weeks ago when she had freaked out and almost thrown away the most precious thing in her life. “You know, I was mad at you for a little while for making me freak out. Now that I look back on it, it’s really the best thing a friend could have ever done. I know that I wouldn’t be where I am right now if you hadn’t planted that damn mustard seed in my head.”

“I’m glad you look at it that way… And I really didn’t mean to freak you out. I was only verbalizing what I was seeing. I had no idea that you were so completely clueless!”

“I sure was wasn’t I?”

Callie thought back to all the nights she and Erica had spent together before they had shared their first kiss. Looking back, she could easily identify all of the tell tale signs of their budding infatuation - The playful physicality when they were together… The way Erica immediately brightened like a ray of sunshine when she walked into the room… The touches that always lingered for seconds longer than they really needed to. They had all been blatantly presented for her to see yet it took an unexpected slap in the face to open her eyes up to the beautifully harsh light of reality. As painful as it was, Callie was eternally grateful to Addison for her rude awakening.

“Is everything else going okay for you Callie? I know you were having a rough time with the whole coming out as a couple thing…”

“It’s still scary but at least everyone at the hospital is pretty much leaving us alone. George took the unfortunate privilege of being collateral damage with everyone talking about how he was such a pussy that he turned his ex-wife gay.”

“Poor guy…”

“Yeah, but it serves him right for what he did to me… Not that I’m holding a grudge or anything.”

“Callie…”

“I know. I’m only kidding… kind of.” Callie listened as Addison chuckled on the other side of the line. She was glad that someone else in the world understood what it was like to be betrayed by the man who had promised them the world. “Thanks for everything Addy… for the whole freaking me out and then talking me off the ledge. I really wouldn’t be here right now if you didn’t.”

“What are friends for, right?”

Callie turned as she heard the locks in the door click over, a 1000 megawatt smile instantly forming on her face. “Hey, Erica’s just getting home right now. I’ll give you a call later?”

“Fine… hang up on your best friend so you can get into your girlfriend’s pants.”

“Addison!”

“I’ll talk to later… Tell Erica I said hi.”

Callie placed her phone on the coffee table and turned just in time to see a pair of lips descending onto her own. She would never get tired of the tingly sensation that would run from her head straight to her toes the instant their lips would touch. Tonight she tasted so incredibly sweet, like a freshly ripened peach. She couldn’t help but bury her fingers into her lover’s curls and pull her in for a deeper kiss.

“Well, that was quite the welcome home.” Erica beamed as their lips parted and their eyes met. She sat on the couch, wrapping her arms around her awaiting lover. It was exactly what she needed after the long day she had at the hospital.

Callie inched her body as close as she could to the fairer woman. She couldn’t get enough of her scent, her softness, her touch. She knew it would drive her mad until the end of days. She leaned into her sensual blonde curls and huskily whispered, “Voy a tocarando con mi lengua hasta que tu vengas en mi boca un mil veces.”

The deep timbre of the Latin woman’s voice was enough to send sparks of desire flying throughout the older woman’s body. “I don’t know what you just said but I really love the way it sounds.”

Callie smiled to herself as she wrapped her arms around Erica and pulled her down so she was lying on top of her. She lightly nipped at her ear and then translated, “I’m going to lick you until you come in my mouth a thousand times…”

“Babe, hurry up. We’re going to be late for work!” Erica called from downstairs.

She was always the first to roll out of bed… The first to be ready… The first out the door. As hard as she tried to get Callie to be on time, some mornings proved to be harder than most. In all fairness, Callie’s little erotic suggestion the night before had kept the pair awake and all over each other until about three in the morning. Erica always enjoyed their spontaneous romps in the sack but they somehow always seemed to happen when they would have to be at the hospital at an ungodly hour in the morning.

“I’m coming! Just give me another minute.”

Upstairs, Callie was still running around the bedroom clad in nothing but her underwear. They had been in such a hurry to rip each other’s clothes off the night before that the bedroom was uncharacteristically disheveled. Pieces of both women’s clothing lay in heaps all over the floor and carelessly draped over random corners of the furniture. As hard as Callie tried, she couldn’t find her scrub top anywhere.

“Erica,” Callie yelled out the door, hoping that her lover would hear her. “Have you seen my scrub top?”

Erica smiled to herself as she padded up the stairs to help her lover find her elusive article of clothing. She always found Callie’s early morning dishevelment to be quite endearing… another random reason to fall even more madly in lover with her. She stopped at the threshold of the bedroom greeted with the unexpected sight of Callie’s voluptuous ass facing the doorway. She had knelt down to check underneath the bed, leaving herself pleasantly exposed.

“Not that I’m complaining about the view but… What the hell are you doing?”

Surprised by the close proximity of Erica’s voice she quickly sat up, her missing scrub top in hand. “Found it!”

Erica shook her head and the pair smiled at each other. “How’d that wind up there?…”

“Well, a certain person decided to take advantage of me last night.” Callie responded, throwing on her scrubs and quickly brushing the knots out of her hair with her fingers. “You completely mauled me!”

“I did not! Besides… You did some Spanish voodoo magic on me. I couldn’t control myself.”

“I would never admit to such a thing…” Callie stepped forward to place a teasingly soft kiss onto the lighter woman’s lips. “Gimmie a few more seconds… I’ll meet you at the car.”

Callie watched as the gorgeous blonde turned to head down the stairs and out to the car. To this day, she couldn’t believe how lucky she was to find herself with such a wonderfully beautiful person. She couldn’t imagine living a single day without her best friend… her lover… her person in her life. She was the missing puzzle piece that Callie had been trying to find for so long.

About ready to hop in the car, she glanced in the mirror, checking that she didn’t look too disheveled before showing up to her place of employment. Satisfied that no one would immediately think that she had spent most of the night doing the McNasty with the cardio attending, she decided it was finally time to leave. Reaching for her purse, she missed the shoulder strap sending the bag floor bound. Its contents clumsily drop all over the floor next to the dresser it had been resting on.

“Shit!” Callie felt bad enough that her inability to roll out of bed in a timely fashion was going to make Erica late for work. Now, her affinity for clumsiness guaranteed that they were going to be more than just a few minutes behind.

“Cal… the bus is leaving. You coming or not?”

“I’ll be down in a second!”

Callie quickly raked the spilled contents into the wide mouthed opening of her purse, not really caring for its cleanliness or organization. After a cursory glance on the floor, she noticed a slight twinkle from the lamplight on an object that had fallen right next to the dresser leg. She knelt down to pick it up, realizing that a piece of her past had come back to haunt her.

She sat back on her heels and stared at the silver band that contained the smallest, most pathetic looking diamond she had ever seen. When George had placed it on her finger, it meant the world to her. The size, the price, the circumstance… None of it mattered because this simple silver band had made a promise of eternal love. That night, she made a vow that was never meant to be broken. She trustingly placed her heart into the hands of an emotionally stunted man who, within a year, had completely obliterated it spilling its shattered pieces all over the floors of Seattle Grace.

Months ago, even before she and Erica had become close friends, she had meant to give it back to George. Somehow, every attempt she made ended up with her sidetracked. Most times, her beeper would go off and she’d have to run to an unexpected surgery. Other times, she would be on the way to find her ex-husband only to discover that he was running aimlessly around the surgical floor like a chicken with its head cut off. As more and more time passed, Callie allowed herself forget about it. Eventually, the ring had been carelessly dropped into the black hole that was her purse. It seemed fate would not allow Callie to completely let go of her past.

Silently, Callie cursed at herself for not getting rid of the damn thing. Knowing that Erica had been patiently waiting for her downstairs, she hastily threw it into the small front pocket of her purse and headed for the car. She knew she had to do something with the damned bad juju ring. She just didn’t know what…

Erica walked into the cafeteria, in search of the woman she hadn’t seen since early in the morning. Between rounds and an endless stream of consults, she hadn’t even had the chance to text her beautiful Latin lover to tell her how much she had missed being in her arms.

After taking a cursory glance around the crowded dining area, she spotted her raven haired beauty. Instantly her heart dropped… she could recognize that face from a hundred miles away. As Erica approached the table, she watched as her lover absentmindedly picked at her salad alone and lost in her thoughts.

“Hey you…” Erica playfully nudged her partner’s shoulder in attempt to break her blank stare. “Mind if I sit with the coolest kid in the room?”

“Sure… but I think she’s sitting all the way over there.” Erica watched as Callie pointed clearly across the room.

Erica sighed as took a seat to Callie’s right, resting her hand gently on her thigh. “Cal, you’ve been pushing your food around your plate since before I got here. What’s going on?”

Erica watched her lover’s dark clouded eyes hover over her own. The beautiful topaz orbs that usually sparkled with life were now drowning in doubt and worry. She slowly drew light circles on Callie’s knee in an attempt to soothe the demons that seemed to have taken over her thoughts.

“It’s nothing… I’m, uh… I’m just a little tired.”

“You sure that’s it?”

“Yeah.” Erica watched Callie’s almost pathetic attempt at a smile. “I’ll be okay... Just having a weird morning.”

“You want to talk about it?” Erica tried to pry deeper. She felt almost helpless, not knowing the cause behind her best friend’s troubles.

Suddenly, Callie’s pager goes off. Both women slightly jump at the unexpected sound. Erica silently cursed the electronic device as Callie reached down to check the message. It had interrupted yet another intimate moment with her lover.

“I’ve got to get down to the pit… There’s an MVA rolling in.” Erica’s eyes followed the darker woman as she rose from the table, leaving her meal untouched.

“Cal, you haven’t even eaten your food.”

“I’ll be okay.” Erica felt the slight squeeze of Callie’s hand on her shoulder. It was the only intimate contact she had initiated since they left the house that morning. “I’ll see you later okay?”

Erica nodded and watched as the orthopedic resident briskly walked out the cafeteria down to the pit. Deep inside her gut, she knew that something was troubling Callie. What bothered her even worse was the fact that she wasn’t willing to open up and talk about it. She sighed and took a forkful of salad into her mouth, silently hoping that whatever was bothering Callie wouldn’t undermine the progress they had made in the last few months.

A/N: I know it was kind of an odd place to stop the chapter… I just had to let this portion go so I can get the other half of it unburied from the back of my brain. I promise the next chapter will have some delicious surprises…
