No list of dodgy Melbourne food stuffs is complete without the Dumpling House on Tattersalls Lane that gets shut down with far more regularity than many a person I know has gotten after eating there. One friend will only eat there after they've reopened from a Health Department shut down because they'll be on their best behavior then.
Do you mn Camy's Shanghai Dumpling? I know most meat-eating friends will not touch the meat there, but I think that's a mix of quality issues as well as concern for safety. Haha.
The really strange thing is that I've eaten at this place a few times without any problems and never knew about its food-safety history (only been living here a few months) O_o
Maybe I was either lucky or I have an iron stomach from eating Asian food from places-of-questionable-food-safety-practices for so long...
It's not 100% accurate, but a pretty good indication. As mentioned flat and sniff test should get you through. The worst bout of food poisoning I had I gave to myself through bodgy eggs and I had done the float test.
The types of food eaten in those places will give you a clue, as well - sushi isn't cooked, eggs benedict uses hollandaise sauce (raw eggs) and pork rolls are usually stored at too-low temperatures to keep the meat steaming hot, because that makes the roll go funny. If you're eating anything raw or that's not freshly prepared, be extra careful about where you buy it!
That said, I once got horrific food poisoning from an RJ's sandwich, and that was all vegetarian.

I didn't notice the poor quality of meat. I think I was distracted by the very special "soy sauce".
