I received an email today from a living descendant of Patrick Halligan who was murdered near Rockhampton in the 1860s and whose story was a large part of the inspiration behind The Heart Divided ( Read more... )

Wow, that's amazing! I hope she liked the book and was not upset by any references you made to the time - however slight.

I guess it is a compliment and scary at the same time!

I don't know if she has read the book, yet. I think my handling of the fictional account of the murder is sensitive.

Scary? Yes! One would assume that descendants will know the story backwards, so I needed to point out that my novel is fiction and though it parallels the real case in some ways, it also departs from the facts so much that it had to become 'fiction inspired by historical events' rather than an accurate retelling of historical events.

I'm still a bit shell shocked!
