I think you're right about the unhealthy amount of attention (i.e. addiction to drama) that these people crave.
I was a member of a Christian sect which was persecuted (yeah, even in America, such a thing can happen); I wasn't in it for the persecution, having been raised in the group from birth. How many furries or goths or anyone else on your list can claim the same?
It's clear that the drama whores join these groups as teens or twenty-somethings just to be outrageous, as a means of rebelling against their upbringing. In an age when there's little to legitimately rebel against, people have to start making shit up...
I, personally, have a hard time taking people belonging to these groups seriously, given that so many of them appear to be mere posers.
