I ordered the first six DVDs of Last Exile from RightStuf's bargain bin, so good to know it's worthwhile.
I started to watch Gundam Wing a couple years back (well, a little less) and got to about episode 18, when I got distracted...I loved the crack, but for some reason I can't seem to get into it again. Ah well.
I think the animators were determined to make sure it was the last Saiyuki series.
Thankfully, the more recent Burial OVAs more than make up for it. They're actually faithful to the manga plotlines, the character design is much much closer to Minekura's work and the animation is gorgeous.
Not that I'm aware of, alas...I'd be the first one in line BEGGING them to take my money, please, for a nice legit subbed DVD of Gojyo and Hakkai's chapter. :(
In the meantime, though, the fansubs are floating around the usual Veoh/YouTube/Crunchyroll sources, and are probably floating around BitTorrent and the like. They're definitely worth watching -- I can only dream of a better universe in which the entire series got this level of production values.
Trying to take any Gundam series seriously hampers one's enjoyment of them, only 0089 can be considered an actual serious effort. And Wing is not the crackiest Gundam series ever.
However, I will never understand what made the creators think the main pairing was a good idea.
The only two pairings that I consider without a doubt canon in GW is Zechs/Noin and Treize/Une, all the rest lied somewhere in subtext and were never really dealt with, so I consider it open as far as pairings are concerned. Granted that I do actually ship said main pairing that I think you are alluding to.
Zechs/Noin is the only one that really interests me, even though she really could do better. Duo/Hilde is cute, but not around much.
I'd say Heero/Relena was pretty obvious, especially on her part, but the idea of it always struck me as mutually unhealthy. (Though I suspect I'm the only GW fan who finds Heero entertaining, but isn't very interested in him.) I think the creators were pushing the idea pretty hard, but never wanted to bluntly admit to it.

Hmm. Ergo Proxy may end up on my list, in that case.
That's sad to hear about Melody of Oblivion. Ah, well. I guess even GAINAX can screw up.
