Dear Joss Whedon...

...I want to believe you that this really is something natural.  And that you aren't trying to make a statement.  Honestly, however, all I can do reading the pages and the interview is think that you think it's simply been too long since you were called progressive or revolutionary or a friend of the feminist movement.  I really should have more of ( Read more... )

Plus, we all know that if that was ever going to happen naturally, it would have in season 3.

I KNOW! Dude, how much lesbian subtext was there in S3? And then this... Bah!

There were several times in S3 where I thought Faith was going to...uhm...take matters into her own hands. Literally.

I've also looked through a bit of S8...Satsu seems sweet, but completely not Buffy's type(Buffy liked being the nice one in the relationship.) It's like Riley "aww...you're cute...but so out of your league on every level. Here, let me hunt for a nice, uncomplicated girl for you."

But, seriously, Buffy's always been even straighter than I am, even with Faith doing her best to shake her out of it. This is just...completely unnatural for her.

Indeed. The article just...made it worse, IMO.

I haven't read any of Season 8 yet (mostly 'cause I still haven't watched Season 7, but have heard enough about that that spoilers don't concern me), but the part where a Potential falls in love with Buffy? That's cool. I don't know her, she could be a lesbian already, and Buffy's hot. No problems there.

Buffy deciding to experiment with her? Er, no. Buffy's whole speech on how every relationship she has ends badly indicates she'd wait more than twelve issues to get to know someone -- of either gender -- before even considering taking it further, taking that risk. I mean, people are allowed to be single.

AGREED.

The thing of it is that all the subtext(though it was only a "sex. now." away from being text) came from Faith. Buffy's always been straighter than straight, and this just makes no sense whatsoever.

While I can agree that Buffy is straighter than straight, I do think that the exception to that "rule" is Faith. There is an element to Faith, of both wanting the lover and wanting to be the lover, that could have transcended gender for Buffy. Outside of the whole, the WB/CW would never have let that on the air, I think the presence of Angel and Faith's own misguided conduct was what stopped that potential relationship (rather than a lack of interest on Buffy's part).

They both had the intense "the only one like me"/"the only one who might understand me" thing going, along with the alpha female struggle. I could have seen a "Something happening" thing once, because of Buffy's youth and insecurity and the messed up emotional state she was in at the time, and then Buffy swearing it was never happening again and ending up so confused that she did everything she could to remind herself that she was straight.

After Skottie Young, comic book art can do nothing traumatizing to me anymore.

But really, just anothercase of comics deciding that anything same sex automatically makes it better and progressive and more interesting.

It amuses me that the general reaction around Teh Intrawebs seems to be "Yeah, but if she slept with a woman, shouldn't it have been Faith?"

Which, y'know, truth.

I'll be honest, the more troubling aspect to me is she is - yet again - knowingly sleeping with someone who has far stronger feelings for her than she does for them (on top of the equally hinky aspect of being Satsu's boss). I don't know if this a flaw in the writing or a deliberate character choice, but, boy, is it getting tiring.

Well, to clarify, my reaction isn't "if she were to sleep with a woman now, it would be Faith" but "if she were going to sleep with a woman, it would have been with Faith in S3." Just to clarify ( ... )
