However, I was bored by the first volume of Hot Gimmick and didn't bother to read more, but according to the article, the hero demands sexual favors from the heroine, which I didn't remember at all(and I checked with forgottenpolish, who HAS read it and she says that I remember correctly and that's not the case) He does demand, but he never takes and she never lets him. He backs off cause he knows she doesn't want. I swear did they read Hot Gimmick? I will admit he was a jerk to her, and she was a bit of a push over, but they came to terms and she grew up and so did he. He was still bossy to her, but hey that's what she wanted. And he really cared and protected her. Just cause a guy is bossy to a girl doesn't mean its bad, especially if they don't mind and its not terrible. I mean, no one goes up in arms with girls boss guys around. She takes it, but she knows she can stop it or say know any time, its perfectly clear ( ... )

Which is why I think they mostly read vol 1s and then read summaries and made assumptions...or something.

And the above is, I think, what makes HYD/MG so popular...because she never gives an inch unless she wants to and she makes him work for it.

Just reading that article summarized drives me nuts (so you can imagine my 'joy' when I initially read the whole thing).

In Hot Gimmick, yeah, he pushes, she pushes back. The end. I expect a horny teenage boy to have sex. And hey, I see no issue with it if he stops when she tells him to. And the thing with 'he deserves a restraining order' claim? ARGH. He tries to chase after her, he hardly kidnaps or threatens her. GRRRR. He tells her he can't be without her and there is kissing. Mutual. Horrors. Clap him in jail. I don't find Ryoki my type, but I admit he and Hatsumi work fine together and emotionally she is the one in control (significantly she can break up with him and try to move on and he is the one begging her to come back telling her he doesn't care if she slept with her stepbrother).

Re: Hanadan. Don't even get me started. The whole point is how Domyouji grows up and becomes someone Makino can love and he pays a hundred fold for any transgression he ever committed over her. ARGH.

*rage*

Oh yes it was just...have they even READ any of those titles, or just started a few then read summaries?

I was already pissed even BEFORE I got to a Basara pic being used as an example in the part about books where the hero rapes or almost rapes then heroine, because A) there RAPE rape and assault themes in the book, but it's most DEFINATELY not the OTP, and B) when they have sex it is most definately consentual.

It's just...everything in there is a major "grrrr" thing.

Though I know this post is a year old, this is one of the many ones that made me friend you. I agree with everything you said about this article, especially how it misrepresents series by taking things out of context and how it creates misconceptions among readers that all shoujo manga has doinks as main characters. Though there are shoujo manga with such main characters out there, there are just as many that don't.

I think we're (thos of us who mostly read licensed stuff, at least)lucky and get most of the worst of it filtered out through licensing. But man, I had a brief spike of rage ove the article when I saw what post it was.
