There's no crying in SciFi!

Except of course, there is. I found this link to the 26 greatest SF tearjerkers. I agree with most of them, if not with their places in the rankings. For one thing, I think that about half the spaces should be taken by moments from the LOTR trilogy. "My brother. My captain. My king." I mean . . . come on! I cried more in those three movies ( Read more... )

I have never NOT cried at the end of Fellowship. It just doesn't matter how many times I've seen it, there's a little part of me that hopes that *this* time, Aragorn will get there in time to save Boromir. *weeps*

I hear you. I was that way with SW - kept going back hoping that in this release Qui-Gon wouldn't die. But truly, nothing gets to me like LOTR. I cried when the freakin' Elves showed up at Helm's Deep! I'm getting all misty just thinking about all the weepy moments. Maybe I need an intervention. And I have no LOTR icons at the ready! Now I will weep.

The Elves at Helm's Deep! Yes! And that quiet scene in the middle of chaos in RotK with Gandalf and Pippin when they talk about death and what comes after.

Aaand now I'm crying again.

From the moment Boromir leaves Frodo, I start crying. Big, heaving sobs. That list was way too "Dr Who" heavy and way too "Buffy" light. How could they miss Tara's death and Dark Willow? I have a CD with Sarah McLachlan's version of the prayer of St Francis that was played at the end of that episode, when Dark Willow was on the hilltop with Xander, and I still get weepy when I hear it. *sniff*

Yeah, that scene in Buffy does it to me every single damn time. "The Body" is another one.

But maybe Buffy isn't exactly science-fiction? More fantasy/horror? ('Course LOTR isn't sci-fi either!)

Yeah, they were pretty loose on their definition of "sci-fi". There were a couple of different mentions of "Angel" (both about Wesley and Fred - which really were heart-tuggers - I miss Buffy/Angel - just haven't been able to get into Dollhouse). "The Body" was amazing - really hit home about the randomness of death and the aftershocks that reverberate for the survivors. Why that episode wasn't nominated for an Emmy, I'll never understand.

Oh, the Boromir moment gets me every time!

I would have put the Iron Giant at #1. That particular Star Trek moment hits me as too--I dunno, it's just too contrived. I do remember crying at a different ST moment (one of the Next Gen movies, involving Data) a lot more.

From Return of the King. Pippin is singing and the men are riding towards their death and Denethor is being an ass. I burst into tears every freaking time.
