Robin blinked. Then he stepped back, closed the door, and stared at that for a second. He pinched himself, shook his head, and opened the door again.

The Bat Cave was still being overrun by little yellow minions.

“Batman?” he called cautiously. “Should I initiate Protocol-Three?”

“No, no need,” came Bruce's voice. The Bat Cave had terrible acoustics, but Bruce could project like nobody's business. Well, Dick could, too, but that was beside the point.

He descended the steps slowly, stepping carefully around the yellow tide ebbing up the first few stairs. “How did we get so many minions?”

Batman was sitting as his computer, tiptaptyping away as minions surged this way and that way with small pieces of metal or wire or tools. “I hired them,” Bruce said as Dick came to stand beside his chair. “They're remarkably efficient.”

Three minions ran by, carrying what appeared to be one half of a mechanical shark, welded to a colander.

“Efficient...at what, exactly?” Dick wanted to know.

Bruce swiveled back to his computer. “Did you expect that?”

“You mean the noodle-straining shark? No. No I did not.” Dick could say that much with absolute certainty.

“Neither will anyone else,” Bruce said, and Dick could have sworn Bruce looked smug.

Dick was opening his mouth to wonder what a colander-shark could do, anyways, but decided to take the better part of valour. “Right,” he said instead. “I'm going to Happy Harbor. Be back tomorrow.”

“Wait.” Bruce pushed back his chair and headed for the weapons rack. The minions opened up before him and closed ranks after him, Dick noted sourly as he carefully hopped around, trying desperately not to step on anyone or anything.

Bruce was waiting at the table when Dick finished his game of demented hop-scotch. “Here,” he said, dropping a handful of pill capsules into Robin's hand. “Blue ones are sleep gas, red ones explode, green ones are smoke bombs, and the yellow ones are yellow.”

Robin already had most these compounds in his belt, only bigger. “More effective?” He asked, cocking an eyebrow. “Wait, what do you mean, the yellow ones are yellow?”

One of the minions hopped up onto another, and another on top of that, until they were four high. The top one says something like “blahahahableebplopadoowhoihicky ahahaha.”

“Exactly,” Batman nodded. “Thank you, Paul.”

Robin stared at the-at Paul, and then at the capsules in his hand. Then he looked around at the swarm, and said, “Leaving. Now. Bye!”

He hopped up onto the table and flipped over to a bench, the next island in the yellow sea. With a judicious use of flips and jumps, he successfully reached his motorcycle, and was out the door in seconds.

There was a tug on Batman's cape, and he looked down to see Jake. Jake blobbled for a second, revved his hands like he was riding a motorcycle, and then spread his little arms as wide as they could go.

“Don't worry about it,” Bruce said. “Robin'll notice soon enough.”
