Hopefully, they'll connect each side of these choices to a character who you can feel empathy for. Geth vs. quarians and krogans vs. salarians may not strike at the emotional chords, but Tali v. Legion and Wrex v. Mordin most likely would.
This is exactly how I've been looking at it. The choices we make will be on a species-level but we know someone from that species and that's going to make the choice that much harder.
A fair point to make about if we have to choose an entire species to annihilate, we will have gotten to know and understand and connect with members of these various species through the series thus far.
Garrus. Liara. Mordin.
We would, as Shepards, have to look one of them in the eye and say 'Yes, I am going to allow your entire race to be utterly and completely obliterated.'
Yeah, I agree with this logic a lot, and your comment below. We know very prominent members of the races involved, as well as multiple opinions through them. Their thoughts and opinions are going to be VERY vocal about all this, I think, and will definitely be adding to the issue.
I think the main reason why the Arrival sacrifice didn't carry that much "weight" is because we don't actually know any batarians personally. I think the decision would've been much more poignant if there had been a batarian companion during the quest instead of the doctor.
Choosing between other species will be more meaningful I think because we know characters who would suffer if that happened. If the quarians/turians/salarians were wiped out, it would have impact because we have tali/garrus/mordin right there :x
Exactly, the only experiences we have of batarians to draw upon is 'that guy who fucking poisoned me' and 'those dudes I shoot at all the time' and 'man they're ugly'
Completely agree. I didn't care about blowing up all those Batarians because they've pretty much been the dicks of the universe in both games. I'm surprised they don't have large black mustaches to twirl while they insult every human who passes them by.
If they gave me some real tough choices (save the salarians or the turians) I'd probably be too consumed with emotion.

Not that generates much sympathy for them but it does add to the "I am supposed to feel bad about this WHY?"

Oh, ho, watch me connect the worries for you:
Bioware, channeling Peter Molyneux, will pull a "YOUR LOVE INTEREST OR AN ENTIRE COLONY" in the first 30 minutes of the game.
Only this time I'll actually care and feel way worse than I did in Fable 3.
/That would be a super cheap move on Bioware's part
