Cassie was making progress in physical therapy. She could keep moving for half an hour now and the days of not making it down the hall were long over. There was still a long way to go but she could see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel ( Read more... )

See that? That was a very worried, concerned, and slightly pissed off father standing over Cassie's bed. A worried father who had gotten a phone call from the hospital that his recently heart surgery finished daughter had decided to take down a mugger on her way home from physical therapy, walking home, in fact, because her stepfather couldn't master the art of picking up a teenager with questionable taste in men immediately from her appointments.

"And the reason you decided to walk home was?" Scott questioned as soon as he saw her regaining consciousness.

"Apparently, someone decided to take down a mugger?" Scott reminded her. "While on blood thinning medicine because of the heart surgery she recently had?" No, Daddy was not happy. And he'd be having words with his lawyer about speeding up the custody hearing because of this. If his ex wife's husband could not pick his daughter up on time from the physical therapy she had on a regularly scheduled basis...

It wasn't her fault the mugger had punched her! ...Well yeah, it was.

"Yeah, looking back that was pretty stupid."

He was still facepalming at her.

"...and what made you think that that was a good idea, again?"

She could so easily turn that question around at him. But she didn't, because really, he was right.

"I kind of wasn't thinking. Or I was thinking that a guy was getting mugged and somebody had to be a good Samaritan and uh... Yeah. It was really stupid."

He sighed a little, and took her hand in his own.

"Look, I know your heart was in the right place... but, yeah, it was stupid," he said, smiling at her.

Cassie squeezed Nate's hand.

"Well if I do it about a zillion more times I guess we're even."
