Pet peeves list

 My pet peeves:

·       Sansa continuously calling Sandor ‘ser’ just to annoy him. This especially applies to ACOK setting fics because I don’t think she would willingly annoy him in that time period.
·       Sandor being afraid to light a camp fire and Sansa having to do it for him.
·       Sandor being as honourable as Ned Stark.
·       Sansa ( Read more... )

A good writer will have me focusing on what I enjoy about their writing rather than these issues. Still I can't say a story that uses any of these tropes has been one of my favorites and I will avoid them other things being equal as they just don't ring true to either sides canon characterization, which is fundamental to my enjoyment of a fic ( ... )

Yes, everything you’ve said here is so true. The BWB was an exceptional event with extreme conditions and otherwise, Sandor would never be bothered by fire. People in the medieval time were dependent on fire to heat and light their houses so it’s ridiculous to think that he wouldn’t be well used to being constantly surrounded by it. He might have been fearful of it at first when he was 6 years old just after he had been burnt but it’s obvious he’d have had no choice but to quickly get over it. To believe otherwise is ridiculous IMO.

Wow, that drawing is amazing and a nice ‘fuck you’ to all those authors who believe Sandor is frightened to light a campfire. I really love it. :D

I was thinking more of those times in fics where Sandor refers to himself as a dog and Sansa is like: "Stop that! You're not a dog! You shouldn't call yourself like that!" When I read this, I'm always thinking that, no, he IS a dog and should continue being proud of his family sigil the same way Ned always refers to packs for his family and Tyron refers to himself as a small lion.

'A shy flirt? Curious teenage Sansa finding Sandor passed out from wine and she dares to pat his torso and to trace his muscles?'

These are all fine to me but it must work within the context of the story. Like she wouldn't do neither of these things in ACOK without any new build up before. That’s just my take on it though and you don’t have to agree of course.

‘That, however, wouldn't be exactly selfless...’

Exactly.

Lord yes!
The fire one really gets on my tits. do they thinks he's some sort of Arctic mole that lived his life without light and heat?

I would add Sandor being a sell sword in KL with nothing to his name to my list of pet peeves. He had a position of considerable prestige and influence even before his promotion to the Kingsguard. Hence his decision to leave was not taken lightly.

...That's become a fic trope??? WTF?! Forty thousand gold dragons for winning one tourney, people! And considering that he unhorsed Jaime in the Hand's Tourney, I'm sure Sandor made quite a bit of money in previous tourneys too from ransoms as well as prizes.

And that doesn't even take into account that the Lannisters pay their debts and someone they trusted and valued enough to make the personal bodyguard of the heir to the throne would be *very* well compensated and never lack for anything.

I don't think it's become a trope as such but I've read a few fic's that imo underestimate his position. He didn't have nothing to lose, he had wealth, power and influence.
As someone with direct access to the royal family he would have enjoyed a lot of grace and favour from traders and the medieval version of political lobbyists.

'medieval version of political lobbyists'

That's interesting and very likely. I think Sandor is looked upon as a rich man by many and he certainly didn't lack of anything as long as he stayed in KL. He had a lot to lose by deserting. Later on, when he's wandering through the Riverlands and has gotten robbed of his gold by the BWB, then things have changed and he indeed has become a man with nothing to lose but not before.

Sorry. I just have a hard time becuase I find there is a lot of snark in the fandom. I don't understand it all. I just...I don't know. I have had some people lately tell me that they are not writing SanSan anymore or are scared to post their art work because fandom peeps can be so...rude I guess...especially if it is not canon or exact canon. I understand the desire for canon only. Shit. I love canon the most. I guess I just don't get it. Not that desire for canon only or perfect characterization, just the crap that follows someone if they get it wrong. But again I am probably way out of line here because this is your journal and your post and you are allowed to say whatever you want! lol sorry! And please know this is not an attack or me trying to be a bitch or whatever. I just don't understand is all!

Well first off, I wasn’t thinking of anyone in particular when I decided to write this post. You shouldn’t take any of this personal. Also, I’ve read fics that included some of these pet peeves - like the ‘dog’, ‘ser’ and ‘the Hound is dead’ ones - and enjoyed them anyway so it’s not to say that it makes any fic including them shitty. Yet, what I think is most important to point out is that these are MY pet peeves which means that I’m speaking of my own tastes and not of what is wrong or not. I’m not GRRM and I have no clue of what is going to happen in the future books. Perhaps all my pet peeves will come true eventually, who knows. If you love any of those tropes, you shouldn’t feel any less confident to use them just because I don’t share your views. There can be many schools of thoughts in the sansan community existing at the same time - just like in psychology, for example - and I don’t see where the problem is with that ( ... )

I am not offended at all. It is really hard to make me offended. While I disagree with something's in this whole post, it does not make think any less of anyone. Me, personally, someone could say my work is shit, awful no good and I would laugh because I know it's GREAT! lol ( ... )

Are any of these a result of having read too many of such tropes? Or did they annoy you also the first time you encountered them?

I have noticed in myself that some tropes or little things that were fine when I read them the first time, or second, and third, finally started to feel a bit lukewarm after had I read them for the hundredth time... In my case maybe more little idioms and sayings, like 'worrying her lip' or Joffrey's or Ramsay's 'wormy lips'. Or Sansa orgasming on her first time (although it is in the realms of possibility, but still ( ... )

Of course, to read the same things over and over again has a lot to do with it but the tropes I’ve listed here have always bothered me, even the first time I’ve read them.

As for the dog thing, you know if someone came to Ned Stark and called him, "Hey, you wolf!" that'd be taken as an insult also. What I was speaking of here was mainly of when Sandor refers to himself as a dog in conversations.

‘Luckily LJ is still a good place for such discussions!’

I agree! I do feel like the Tumblr format sucks for deep discussions and that all we ever do these days is touch upon this and that before passing to the next call just as quickly.

Tumblr is definitively not always conducive for proper discussion. It is difficult, and a two-pronged thing; on one hand of course we are free to express our opinions about any matter and without doing that there can be no discussion, but also there is the reality that our opinions may end up affecting people in the ways we didn't think would be possible. Again, it is not our concern as such - yet...

I applaud LJ as a better forum for sharing some views - also it feels a bit 'safer' especially nowadays. Maybe it is not so easily accessible to 'troublemakers' in Tumblr?

One of the problems with Tumblr is that with the reblog and tag systems, you never know where your posts are going to end. On LJ, my journal may be public but my posts are at least not wandering god knows where without me having a clue about it.
