Pet peeves list

 My pet peeves:

·       Sansa continuously calling Sandor ‘ser’ just to annoy him. This especially applies to ACOK setting fics because I don’t think she would willingly annoy him in that time period.
·       Sandor being afraid to light a camp fire and Sansa having to do it for him.
·       Sandor being as honourable as Ned Stark.
·       Sansa ( Read more... )

A good writer will have me focusing on what I enjoy about their writing rather than these issues. Still I can't say a story that uses any of these tropes has been one of my favorites and I will avoid them other things being equal as they just don't ring true to either sides canon characterization, which is fundamental to my enjoyment of a fic.

The second one is the most grating for me as my Sandor would take the most offense by it. He's no candyass that flinches at the sight of a torch like HBO's Sandor in season 2. Fire is the most frequently used weapon of war and as a soldier since age 12, Sandor would have had to face the flames in every single battle. In the books, his moment of crisis comes about due to wildfire, which is 100x more vicious, and after he lead three sorties and lost half his men and horses. That's not the kind of man that flinches at starting a campfire. If he had been like that, then Tyrion wouldn't have expressed such surprise at his behavior.

Bubug and I had a mutual rant session about this. An end result was this illustration with the smoky embers right in Sandor's face. Because he's no craven that is afraid of a puny campfire.

Yes, everything you’ve said here is so true. The BWB was an exceptional event with extreme conditions and otherwise, Sandor would never be bothered by fire. People in the medieval time were dependent on fire to heat and light their houses so it’s ridiculous to think that he wouldn’t be well used to being constantly surrounded by it. He might have been fearful of it at first when he was 6 years old just after he had been burnt but it’s obvious he’d have had no choice but to quickly get over it. To believe otherwise is ridiculous IMO.

Wow, that drawing is amazing and a nice ‘fuck you’ to all those authors who believe Sandor is frightened to light a campfire. I really love it. :D
