I've been on another Ursula Le Guin kick. I read Changing Planes, and then Lavinia (not as good), and now it's Unlocking The Air. I also got Always Coming Home from the library ( Read more... )

Why would you ever say "How much?" to an attractive woman? As a really really stupid attempt at a pick up?

Close. A stupid attempt to elicit a laugh in the comments attached to a random photo of some beauty-contest participant.

Which ... makes it the ideal context for the men in the audience to get defensive and spill a few pages of virtual ink exonerating themselves! It's very important that they are virtuous, you see.

As a person in Portland who might theoretically be interested in going to Vancouver, I would appreciate some infos on that train perhaps!

Wise Amtrak tip: When returning to Vancouver on Cascades, ask for a seat as far back in the train as possible.

When you reach Pacific Central they lock down the train, pull out all the baggage first, and then unload people one car by one starting at the rear of the train. So your position on the train determines how many people will be waiting in front of you to get through Customs.

Also: Once you're sure that you're going, pick up your tickets the day before is possible. This will save you precious minutes when you come to get on a 6:40 AM train. Otherwise you will be simultaneously lining up for security and scrambling to obtain your ticket.

Have fun! :D

As a fun tip, as long as you disassemble your bike the way they request and put it in a bike bag, WestJet will count your bike as your second piece of baggage (provided that it's a lighter frame, natch).
