Reading Master and Commander’s first chapter will soon begin. What joy!

Patrick O’Brian’s characters, the actions described, the locations visited all speak for themselves. If, in the course of reading, you get curious about the naval jargon, some of the characters, the Napoleonic Wars or the time and locations, here is a reference menu. Always remember that you do not need to read any of these books or follow any of the links to appreciate the Aubreyad.

For starters we offer the invaluable HMS Aubreyad, compiled by max_und_moritz and linked to with their permission

Five courses of Books 'n Links

A. This is only a selection which is not a ranking of the quality of the books themselves; there are mountains of additional books and links out there on Georgian England, the Napoleonic Wars, Trafalgar, Nelson and assorted biographies. If you have another recommendation, please drop a comment here. :D

B. As we proceed through the Aubreyad, the inclusion of some books and links will become clearer to you. :D

C. Most books are still available; for some you might like a look into used book stores. Some are no longer available, and project gutenberg or google books are a good place to start browsing.

D. This post will be updated now and then.
