A really good buddy of mine, Utu, runs the Niagara Voodoo Shrine in St. Catharines. He's also the lead drummer in the Dragon Ritual Drummers. Anyway, he did a lecture and mini-ritual on Saturday about Voodoo. Awesome, awesome talk. But the ritual was a tease, got it all started but then due to time constraints, he ended it short. Aww... Anyway, Mama Lola is incredible, Utu sings her praises all the time. She's great. Ironically enough, he actually recommends Idiot's Guide to Voodoo. They're actually pretty good. I can get a list of other books he recommends. I've been to a few rituals that he's lead and I've never experienced anything like it, I trust what he says on the matter.

Anyway, if you haven't seen The Skeleton Key, watch it. Great movie and fairly accurate to Voodoo. Mama Lola's interviewed in the special features and it's fun listening to her talk.

Oh, rock on! Yeah, I'm super interested to read the Mama Lola book myself. And I would LOVE a list of reccs, thank you!

I would only watch Skeleton Key for the interview, since my buddy Di says the film itself fails beyond belief as a horror movie. My favourite voodoo flick is STILL Angel Heart. Good friggin movie. It has special features on the DVD about New Orleans Voodoo, one of which features the whitest, fattest weirdo you would ever care to see. Just sitting there with his albino snake. But they speak to this dancer lady and that portion is cool.

It's more "thriller" than horror movie. For what it was, I thought it was pretty cool. The thing with a lot of the special features interviews, you wish they were a lot longer.

*whispers* I heard that "Jambalaya" by Luisah Teish is supposed to be a GREAT handbook for beginner rituals. Just heard, mind you.
