THE 19th CENTURY.The main setting of Absolvisti is Europe, especially Britain, in an alternative 19th century, an almost steampunk sort of way. All characters will come into the world in the general area of the country of Britain, and if elsewise happens, they will most likely be found by a Finder, an employee of the Black Order whose jobs are to track down Innocence.
As this is set in an "alternative" version of the 19th century, anachronisms are abound, and so we aren't expecting everyone to be entirely historically accurate. Please keep in mind the very basics of the century, however, and note that unless a character comes in with items and clothing that don't fit into the period, it's not going to be available any other way.
Because we do not feel an entire review of the century is in order, and this is "alternative universe" anyway, we will simply recommend a little bit of things to read and peruse if you happen to need a refresher.

TERMINOLOGY.AKUMA: Akuma are monsters--part soul, part machine, and part despair. When a friend, family member, or lover has passed on, naturally those that cared the most will mourn. It is during this time of vulnerability that the Earl appears to them and offers to make a deal with them, so he may bring them back to life, although in a mechanical body.
Once they agree, he does so, creating the machine and placing the soul inside. The machine screams out to the person who requested him to do this, and more often than not, the machine kills the person. Once murdered, the machine fits themselves into their body, using it as their skin to go about the world. Now, they are forever a servant to the Earl, and thus, a tool of to fight against the Order and help destroy Innocence.
There are several "levels" of Akuma, expanded on
here, but this is not necessary information.

ANTI-AKUMA WEAPON: An anti-Akuma weapon is a weapon that is composed of Innocence and can be used to destroy Akuma. All members of the Black Order with the title of Exorcist or Exorcist General possess one of these, and some characters from other worlds may possess an active Anti-Akuma weapon at some point. They may be used only by a single person who is "compatible" with them, and tend to backfire otherwise.
There are two types of Anti-Akuma weapons:
Equipment type weapons are the most common type. They take the shape of external weapons, such as swords or guns, even boots, and are easily wielded by their compatible user. There are some disadvantages to this, however, that being that the user is unable to fight if they do not have access to their weapon, and it is extremely difficult to use the Innocence within it to it's full potential.
Parasitic type weapons are very rare. They are formed when the Innocence actually dwells within the user's body, and can transform to make a part of them become a weapon, such as an arm, eye, or even teeth. Parasitic type users are able to gradually work their weapons up to their full potential, and sometimes the weapons change or are activated based upon the user's emotions. However, users of this type of Innocence usually tire after using it a great deal, especially if they have not fully mastered their Innocence. They tend to require a large amount of food and rest in order to maintain their health.
The destruction of an Anti-Akuma weapon that was created from the Heart of all Innocence could have devastating effects...
EXORCIST: They are known as the "apostles" of Innocence, and are members of the Black Order. Their purpose is to fight against the Earl, Noahs, and Akuma, and protect civilians from being killed and the world from being destroyed, but generally do not consider themselves saviors due to the dark line of work they follow.
Exorcists are users of Anti-Akuma weapons, most commonly equipment type, although there are several parasitic type users as well. Exorcists who have maximized the use of their Anti-Akuma weapons are made Exorcist Generals, and currently there are four alive.
They can be easily identified by their black and white (or gold, for generals) uniforms, bearing a large Rose Cross on their breast, though specific styling of the clothing tends to vary. They very rarely remove this uniform, using it as a magnet to attract Akuma so they can kill them.

FINDER: Finders are members of the Black Order, but do not have the same job as Exorcists. They are sent to scout places where Innocence may be located, and then call the Exorcists when it is found. Their uniform is a tan coat with a hood, and their faces are often covered. They carry a telephone on their backs.

INNOCENCE: A material left behind by the ancients, Innocence is a magical property that inhabits items, animals, or in rare cases, body parts, enchanting it with magical properties. These are often used as weapons to fight against Akuma. There is a special sort of Innocence called "Heart" that, if destroyed, will destroy all of the other Innocence in the world as well, but it is not an easy task.
There were about 109 units of Innocence before the Earl broke the Heart into countless pieces, though there are only around twenty known users of Innocence, all of them members of the Black Order.
There is currently a war going on over the material, between the Black Order and the Earl of the Millennium with the help of the Noah family.
NOAH: In this world, the term Noah--the man who built the ark and placed all of the animals two by two in preparation for the Great Flood, as commanded by God--is not used to describe the person, but the relatives of him, simply referred to as the "Noah family, "Noahs," or singularly, a "Noah." There are thirteen of the family, though only four are known, and at least one is dead (killed by the Earl himself for giving away secrets of the family, though the Earl is not even known to be blood-related to them).
It is unknown whether or not Noahs are actually human or not. Each member of the family has a special magic ability, such as regeneration or time alteration, and it varies greatly. Each has a "white" and a "black" form, the white one where they appear as a normal human, usually with pale skin. Their black form usually has dark, tanned skin, and they can be easily distinguished by the crown of thorn markings that runs across their forehead, a row of crosses. In this form they can use their powers.
There is a rumored third form that the Noahs can turn into--a form where they "give into their black side," and become a complete monster. It is unknown how this comes about or how it looks.
