The fact that the house was filled with visible mist was unsettling, but not enough to give reason for the deep sense of dread that Mello had felt since nightfall. The tension was rather overwhelming, and he couldn't deny that he felt genuinely afraid. But as he couldn't even begin to place the source of this fear, he quickly decided that the best way to deal with it was to try and push it to the back of his mind and simply continue living.

In any case, the first thing to address was the newly fallen temperature of the house. The jacket he'd found earlier was no longer substantial on its own; he'd need find another layer of clothing. He sprinted down the hallway-- even if there didn't appear to be anything dangerous, it wasn't worth it to risk lingering-- and thrust open the door to the sewing room.

It wasn't until he was about halfway across the room that he noticed that the room had another occupant; some kid-- teenager, probably-- had apparently decided to take up residence under the table. While that was quite far from the ( ... )

Toboe tried not to pay the human much mind at first, he didn't seem to mean any harm. He could help but watch curiously, though. He liked being around people, and the company set him at ease a bit- though he was quite surprised when he was actually addressed. He crept out from his hiding spot a bit to look up at the blonde.

"W-well, the room I was staying in didn't feel right... so I just came here. It seemed like a good place to stay." He paused for a moment, "U-um, that is, unless you're staying here..."

He didn't want to make the human upset, though he wasn't very keen on the idea of leaving this place either. Hopefully he would let him stay.

Mello raised an eyebrow. So the kid hadn't been chased in here by some sort of vicious ghost, but had rather simply gotten a bad feeling about another room. How anticlimactic.

But certainly not disappointing. Anticlimactic answers were much more often relieving around here.

"Which room?" He didn't bother to look back at the kid as he continued rummaging through the boxes, pausing only when he found a rather thick pair of socks that he supposed might be a good idea to keep. He shoved them into the pocket of his jacket before moving on to another box.

Which room... well... he didn't know what the rooms where called, or really how to describe them well.

"The one that's kind of high up."

He couldn't exactly verbalize how to describe the loft bedroom without any idea what a loft was in the first place. To him it was simply a more quiet room where he might be able to watch the humans and it had a good view outside.

Toboe finally crept out of his little hiding spot ans watched the human pick at things here and there. Maybe he lost something? Well he could probably help with that!

"Um... are you looking for something?"

That was a bloody strange description, and it was hardly specific enough to be useful, but it could still very well have meant something. Mello found himself half convinced that the tape had been doused in some sort of chemical.

He gave a slight shrug before bringing the tape up to his nose to sniff it.

"It doesn't smell like anything." He glanced back up at the kid, giving him a puzzled stare. The tape just smelled like any perfectly ordinary plastic object.

Mello sighed rather impatiently, shaking his head in response. "It won't play by itself. It needs..."

He paused for a couple of seconds. How did one explain a tape player to someone who likely wouldn't even understand what the hell it meant?

"Something else," he concluded. A sufficient explanation could be damned. "And we should find something else so we can listen to it." He swiftly pocketed the tape and turned to cross to the far wall of the room.

"You don't smell it?"

That was strange, maybe he just wasn't very good at smelling things? Toboe watched as the human as he started to look around the room. Did he think the thing was in here? Maybe he could help!

"Would what your looking for smell like that thing too?"

"I don't," Mello answered flatly.

It didn't matter that he had no idea why the kid was so focused on the tape's scent. The house's population already consisted of more than enough screwballs, though. It was more likely than not that Toboe was simply able to smell something that he couldn't. Stronger senses, perhaps? In any case, if whatever the kid was doing could help him find out whether there had been other tapes had been placed around the house, it was probably a useful asset.

"Likely." He nodded, though not bothering to look back at the kid. "I want to find out if there are any more of them."

He got onto his knees to crawl behind the mannequins in the corner so that he could search around the wall behind them. He wasn't entirely sure where to start looking, but he supposed it would be a decent plan to make sure that there was nothing else in this room before moving on ( ... )

He beamed, well, if the little plastic thing smelled like what... he still didn't know his name...

Well, in any case he could probably sniff out what they were looking for. Toboe followed his friend to the... fake plastic humans... those were... kind of creepy, but he could ignore them.

"I.. um... don't think it's in here then..."

He couldn't smell anything like it in the room. There was a lot of other foreign things about... but nothing that smelled like the tape.

And I am starting a new chain so it doesn't get squished on the side of the page. is_not_number1 December 20 2011, 04:21:27 UTC
Mello quirked an eyebrow in response to the affirmation. Unbelievably dense or not, the kid had at least been right about the tapes, and he had to admit that was tremendously helpful.

While he had never owned a dog, he supposed that having Toboe around was probably damn close.

The tapes, however, were more important than however dimwitted or capable at tracking scents Toboe might have been. This guy might have been in possession of more, but hardly sounded as though he was especially familiar with them. In that case, it would probably be a safe bet to assume that he had found them here as well; it seemed incredibly unlikely that they would have belonged to him if he didn't know what they were.

"Excellent," Mello commented, smirking in some satisfaction. "See, we found this in the room with the mannequins." He fished the tape out of his jacket pocket and held it out so that the guy could look. "I wanted to find out if there were any more." He paused for a moment to glance back down at Toboe, snickering. "And apparently, dog ( ... )

Toboe puffed out his cheeks in child-like aggravation.

"I'm not a dog!"

Luckily he was able to keep himself from correcting the blond, and he figured even to a human being compared to a dog was offensive. After all... dogs were... dogs. While he didn't mind talking to them, there was just a negative stigma about being compared to a dog. They were owned for one thing. He wasn't! He did what he wanted!

... he just happen to want to be around humans. To protect them, that's all.

...Which didn't actually rule out "wolf", although he still wasn't sure where that was coming from; he LOOKED like a normal boy - werewolf? Tracking something like that by scent wouldn't be normal...

Eh, if it was important, he'd figure it out sooner or later.

"We'd found four of them between the study and the basement - as well as this." Returning the tape to the bag for now, he pulled out the device that'd played them back. "With some other clues getting moved around between night and day, it didn't seem safe to leave it where I'd found it; never did manage to search the upper levels to see if there were more." He held it out, an offer to see what was on the tape Mello had found.

Well. Apparently, being compared to a dog offended the kid. The only response Mello gave to his protest before abandoning the subject in favour of the tapes, however, was another smirk.

It helped that this guy had searched the lower levels as well, although Mello had no idea how thoroughly he might have done so. The fact that he'd found four tapes, though, was significant enough on its own.

"You've listened to them?" Even if he had seemed unsure about what the term cassette tape meant, the fact that he had deemed the tape player worthy enough to hold onto meant there was a perfectly good chance he knew what it did. Mello began to move to take it from the guy; but nearly as soon as he'd started, he lowered his hand again, shaking his head in refusal. "Let's search the second story to see if there are any left first," he decided, gesturing towards Toboe. "If we've got him, we should be able to clear the rest of the house relatively quickly."
