First Case [Video]

[A tiny boy wearing over-sized glasses and a Ravenclaw uniform appears on the screen. He is gingerly holding a wand by one end and looking at it with mixed skepticism and incredulity.]

Oi.  This is ridiculous.  Do they really expect us to believe that we are to learn magic of all things?  It doesn't exist!  Magic is nothing more than sleight of hand ( Read more... )

If magic doesn't exist, then could you explain the portraits suddenly moving and talking as if they're alive?

I can think of multiple ways to accomplish this.

Like what, astro-projection?

Projection is one possibility. Or some other form of recording.

In any other circumstances, I would have agreed with you, young man. But you'll find the magic here to be more than simple illusion.

Saying that the reason for something is magic is worse than no explanation at all.

[Layton chuckles lightly.] That is true if you are dealing with a normal mystery. After all, everything has a solution that can be found if you think critically.

Let me change the subject for just a moment. Have you tried any of the spells that are in the textbooks you received? I think you'll find your answer once you do some investigating there.

Of course! That is a basic part of detective work. Mysteries are just puzzles created by the human mind. If you thin about them hard enough it isn't difficult to figure them out.

No. I didn't see the point in it. Isn't it better to investigate the situation?

Sure, it all defies the laws of physics and makes no sense, but gonna have to break it to you, kid. It's real and it works. There's sleight of hand and all that crap, but that all's got nothing on turning a desk into a pig. No misdirection needed.

I'm a detective. Of course I won't believe in something like this simply because someone says so.

Well, I'm a scientist, and I don't either. But the reality of magic should've been obvious the moment you touched your wand. Focus on it a bit. You'll likely create sparks. Those sparks are a form of energy that has no source, going against the conservation of mass and energy. Plus, there's no fuel and no ignition. It should be completely impossible, but it is.

I noticed the sparks, of course. Are you sure they have no source? I haven't been able to find the tools yet to take it apart.
