First Case [Video]

[A tiny boy wearing over-sized glasses and a Ravenclaw uniform appears on the screen. He is gingerly holding a wand by one end and looking at it with mixed skepticism and incredulity.]

Oi.  This is ridiculous.  Do they really expect us to believe that we are to learn magic of all things?  It doesn't exist!  Magic is nothing more than sleight of hand ( Read more... )

Sure, it all defies the laws of physics and makes no sense, but gonna have to break it to you, kid. It's real and it works. There's sleight of hand and all that crap, but that all's got nothing on turning a desk into a pig. No misdirection needed.

I'm a detective. Of course I won't believe in something like this simply because someone says so.

Well, I'm a scientist, and I don't either. But the reality of magic should've been obvious the moment you touched your wand. Focus on it a bit. You'll likely create sparks. Those sparks are a form of energy that has no source, going against the conservation of mass and energy. Plus, there's no fuel and no ignition. It should be completely impossible, but it is.

I noticed the sparks, of course. Are you sure they have no source? I haven't been able to find the tools yet to take it apart.

Positive. And I wouldn't do that if I were you. It's the combination of the wand wood and the core that acts as a conduit for whatever energy it is that allows us to preform spells. Mine's phoenix feather, and even that shouldn't be possible 'cause phoenixes are supposed to be mythical. Same with unicorns and dragons, which provide material for other cores.

Anyway, take apart your wand and you're not gonna get it back together again. And it'll cost you money to order a new one.

[He makes a irritated face.]

How annoying. That will make this more complicated.

'Sfar as I can tell, we're stuck here. But it might not be such a bad thing 'cause the people of this world seem to need us.

Sure. We all do. But we're stuck here, so until there's a way out found, so we might as well make the best of it.

Is there any reason why we should agree to play along with this ridiculous game?

Oh, I dunno. Maybe 'cause innocent people are dying out there?

[He stills at that news.]

Is this the work of the so-called dark wizard that has been mentioned?

Tch. Fools, all of them. There is no cause worth even one life.

Even one life? Dunno 'bout that.

To save a life? Perhaps. [As long as it was his life alone.] But there is no justification for killing.
