First Case [Video]

Nov 11, 2011 23:00

[A tiny boy wearing over-sized glasses and a Ravenclaw uniform appears on the screen. He is gingerly holding a wand by one end and looking at it with mixed skepticism and incredulity.]

Oi.  This is ridiculous.  Do they really expect us to believe that we are to learn magic of all things?  It doesn't exist!  Magic is nothing more than sleight of hand ( Read more... )

In any other circumstances, I would have agreed with you, young man. But you'll find the magic here to be more than simple illusion.

Saying that the reason for something is magic is worse than no explanation at all.

[Layton chuckles lightly.] That is true if you are dealing with a normal mystery. After all, everything has a solution that can be found if you think critically.

Let me change the subject for just a moment. Have you tried any of the spells that are in the textbooks you received? I think you'll find your answer once you do some investigating there.

Of course! That is a basic part of detective work. Mysteries are just puzzles created by the human mind. If you thin about them hard enough it isn't difficult to figure them out.

No. I didn't see the point in it. Isn't it better to investigate the situation?

Exactly.

Normally it would be, but the situation we're in right now is highly influenced by the information you'll find in those books. In the mean time, I can also give you some information on the castle if you want.

Ah, I should probably introduce myself as well. [Layton tips his hat.] Professor Layton. Pleased to meet you, Mister...?

Conan Edogawa. I'm a detective.

Nice to meet you, professor. And thank you. That would be very helpful.

A detective, hm? I can tell that you're a serious one, by the way you analyzed the concept of mysteries so well.

No problem at all. I understand it may be very disorienting arriving here, so giving information is the least I can do. I can start by telling you that at this moment there is no leaving the castle and its grounds. There's a barrier present that prevents anyone from leaving. You'll meet a variety of different beings here, some of which are ghosts. I advise you to be careful of one of the ghosts named Peeves. He can be rather...rambunctious at times.

There's also quite a bit of information we've managed to gather about the war we've found ourselves drafted into. I can tell you more about that, unless you'd like to read up on it. To be honest, the books will probably be a bit more comprehensive than I am. My apologies for that.

Uncle is a detective, and so is one of my distant relatives. So I've been learning a lot about the job from them.

[Conan listens intently to this information.]

Ghosts? I find that difficult to believe. How are you so certain it isn't a hoax? I've seen that many times before.

If you wouldn't mind I think I would like to do both. Sometimes you can learn things from people that aren't in any book.

Oh, I see.

[Layton smiles.] I'm quite sure. I've had a few encounters with them when I was exploring the castle passages, sometimes passing through them unexpectedly. I can say from the experience that it was no hoax, but I understand if that's hard to believe right now.

Certainly. From what I know, we are up against a man known as Lord Voldemort. He is a powerful wizard who seems intent on 'purifying' the magic world of those with Muggle blood, or those without magical ancestry. He murdered many and tortured much more in his pursuit of this goal. He's already attacked the castle with Inferi, undead beings. Luckily, no one was hurt, but it showed that he has no intention of letting us go quietly back home.

The classes here, while helping us adjust to this new world, are also preparing us for another attack.

[Conan catalogs all of this in his mind. Much of it he intended to check against other sources. But even after removing all the references to magic and the supernatural he did not like what he was hearing. It almost sounded like something the Black Organization would have done. If they had any interest in genocide rather than their business interests.]

...I see.

Though, I hope I haven't sobered your mood too much with this talk about war and such. There is an upside to the situation, as this is also an unprecedented opportunity to befriend various kinds of people and learn about all types of cultures. It's all quite interesting.

Any truth is better than indefinite doubt. I would rather know everything that can be expected here. No matter how painful it might be.

[Layton nods.] I see. That's an admirable outlook to have, Mr. Edogawa. Indeed, the truth, no matter how difficult it may be, is what all detectives should strive for.

Now, is there anything else you would like me to tell you or help you with?

Maybe later. I think I want to try and read through as much as I can so I will know what questions to ask.

[And there was the question of that familiar voice to address. If that person was relly here it would be best to track him down as soon as possible.]
