Happy First Day of Spring!

I went to a movie tonight with my mum and friends and it was pretty great, and I ate some yummy guacamole and delicious dried pineapple, and then I went and checked around the usual internet sites and Mangablog just casually mentioned that bookcloseouts.com has a bunch of manga for sale for 99¢ a piece and FWOOM! I forgot about everything else I ( Read more... )

To be honest, we don't remember a lot of the details of Fruits Basket either. We just happen to have scripts to look back on. Did you notice we mostly only comment when there's a question about translation? We always take those to mean people are questioning which translation is more accurate, because we're self-centered like that. But we like the opportunity to prove that we stand behind our work and if anyone thinks it's questionable, we're prepared to defend it! (Hopefully they won't find the few instances where we're actually wrong.)

We remember that line! Mostly because we had to go to Wikipedia to find out what card game Senko was talking about. In Japan, it's not called "spoons," but "usu no roba ka," which, thinking back, I still don't know what it means. Something about a donkey. But Athena just pulled out volume 5 and the title page with Miharu and Arata and Ponta is sooooo cute♥

I like hearing your thoughts on the translations-it really is so nice to know how much thought and love you put into your work. I'm sure I'll appreciate reading the series even more now that I know who the translators are!

Ha. I remember opening to that title page and thinking "Who is this girl? What is that creature??" (I'm sorry Ponta, if you had shown up before and I forgot you) But he is so cute~!!

We're glad you like them! Of course we always like giving them!

That was pretty much our reaction on seeing Miharu. We're still looking into the Ponta thing; we know random tanuki showed up earlier on, but we don't know if they're officially "Ponta."

If two translations are different and are both by translators I trust (which is the case with FB, and therefore awesome from my POV), I just tend to assume there's some ambiguity in the original* that doesn't translate readily, or that the adapter made a confusing choice, and so I talk about it. (Pronouns...! >.< And furigana that doesn't say what the kanji says, which drives me INSANE. I just adapted a book where the kanji was one name and the furigana was a different one. *cries*)

It makes me a little nervous every time I write about a FB volume, though, because I respect your work immensely, and I always worry that this will be the time you get deeply annoyed about it.

*In Takaya-sensei's case, I swear she likes being ambiguous. I've known several Japanese speakers who've looked at FB and sort of twitched over the idea of trying to translate parts of it. ^^;

Err... lyschan, hope you're not in the camp that minds random chatter in your comments.
