Hivemind request: Gothy music?

Jan 08, 2010 10:00

So I managed to cajole my way into DJing a goth-themed dance in Second Life next Friday. This is the weekend I will devote to building the playlist for it. I have about two hours to cover and I have a rep for keeping to theme to maintain. The kicker? I really don't know the genre that well, or if I know the bands, I don't always know they're goth. Some Siouxsie could fit, but I'm not sure how dancable it would be -- I'd suggest sampling the "Peepshow" album and seeing what you like. "Rhapsody" is quite melodic but slow and long. "Ornaments of Gold" might work. Siouxsie also did a single with Robert Smith in the early 90s, although I forget the name of it.

Is Sisters of Mercy too metal? Deep bass, but a great beat. I'm particularly fond of "Lucretia My Reflection".

+1 on the Cash version of Hurt (ubergoth ouranaphobe put me on to that as being in the best goth tradition... after all, Cash wore black before black was cool), on about anything Enigma, on the Concrete Blonde, the whole Lost Boys soundtrack, NIN, and Gordon Sumner and the gang...

Oh, and one of the local clubs here always shuts down their goth dance night with "The Time Warp." (I once slipped ouranaphobe, who was dj'ing at the time, a cover of the song by Alvin and the Chipmunks. To say it broke brains was to damn with faint praise... :) :) :)

OOOH! Rasputin! Gotta have that.

Oh, see if you can find the version of "Under the Milky Way" by Seven Nations, or barring that, The Church... bagpipes as a rock instrument, FTW (the 7N version)...
