fire-power

About 3 minutes after I posted my last entry, my power supply went up in smoke. Like, seriously, there were maybe some sparks, and then definitely smoke, coming from the bit near where it plugs into the computer, right where the cord thickens. (I have a G4 PowerBook.) *innocently* No, I have no idea what you could possibly mean. Oh, but look, the one I was using has purple smudges all over it, so it really must belong to someone else, right?

You might look into getting one of the iGo supplies. You probably can use the Juice (70W) which lists for $120 but should be available for about $85 street price.

It's a car/airplane/wall socket power adapter, with multiple bits for various laptops, and a "peripheral power supply" option where for $10-20 you can charge your cell phone or pda or mp3 player off the same adapter.

Or see if your nearest Central Computer has Ice in stock. $80 if so.

I have the Juice, and use it occasionally for my Dell. My eMachines is a 90W supply, and I haven't gotten around to finding a deal on the bigger iGo Ice supply for it. If Central has one here in SF, I may get it this weekend though.

I'm using the Juice right now -- it was one of the backup household power supplies. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like the usual place the wires get damaged from constant flexing/tugging.
