I didn't really love any of the movies I saw this month, and didn't even like many of them.

Movies
Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 1 - I forgot to mention that our friend downloaded this and made us watch it at Thanksgiving. Just horrible! why have I seen all of these horrible movies??

Horrible Bosses - Dumb, mean, pointless movie. I disliked ( Read more... )

I saw Cave of Forgotten Dreams recently too! I think if I had seen it in 3D, I would have really liked it. But without the 3D it was kinda boring to me, so I felt like the 3D must have been just a gimmick and that made me feel sad.

It was definitely attention-grabbing.

yeah, tree of life is definitely kinda groan-inducing. the mommie worship wore me out about an hour in. it doesn't help that the "mom" totally babe-a-licious and non-mom-like in any way.

and every time the story kept flashing forward to sean penn navigating the ethereal abyss, i kept thinking "it's too bad this dude is going to grow up to be an insufferable character actor."

i lol-ed at that last sentence.

though i found the shots of the city way more compelling than the forest shots. someone should tell malick to stop being such a damn hippie asshole and make a police procedural in some gleaming metropolis or something.

my favorite malick (badlands) is also a period piece, so i can't totally say that would be the answer, but a contemporary malick movie would be interesting.

my big quarrel with tree of life is that it's the first of hs movies that isn't told from a strange person's perspective (sissy spacek, LINDA FUCKING MANZ, pocahontas for christ's sake). ok, maybe not the thin red line but i haven't seen that in like 15 years and i don't remember much about it. in tree, the voice is MOTHER ARCHETYPE, FATHER ARCHETYPE, SON ARCHETYPE which ends up being really bland once you get past the national geographic photography.

i hate archetypes. i almost never enjoy things that are "mythic."

Was the murder mystery party a surprise to you or a surprise to Gretchen? I want to hear more about this. I looked into going to a murder mystery/dinner theater type place once, but it was out past Buffalo or something and the pictures from the last event showed a bunch of people I did not want to be stuck with for four hours.

It was a surprise to both of us! I just showed up thinking it was a run-of-the-mill surprise party, only to be accosted by mock suicides and drunken sea captains. Um, I am not totally sure how successful it was. People seemed to be having fun but the poor birthday girl was forced to figure stuff out all night (and by figure out, I guess I mean wildly guess everyone one by one and eventually she was right?). If Mason reads this, perhaps he can comment further, as I am not sure I have super accurate impressions of what was going on. I think it was one of those things that comes in a kit.

Once I attended one that was being created by someone, and it was a total disaster. The script was still being written as we milled around, and the punchline to every joke was "Herpes!!!" which is not that funny to many in the group who probably have or have had STIs.

How'd you like Bossypants? I thought it was hilarious and genius and made me love Tina Fey eternally.

Have you see the series Party Down? If not, you should. It's fantastic.

Did you and Cory go to another NYE party after Ani's?

I did like Bossypants a lot, and love Tina Fey. My only problems with it were 1) the perpetual tone of trying to explain past actions and tell her side of the story and 2) the occasional off-color joke that slipped past ("If you see two black kids on one bike, go lock up your bike!" and sort of dehumanizing jokes about sex workers). But overall, very good, A+ material.

YEAH I'VE FUCKIN SEEN PARTY DOWN, and just like every show I like, I was totally hypin' it like mad like over a year ago and no one was biting then! Anyways, yeah, I love it. Thanks for thinking of me!

Yeah, Cor and I walked to my friend Dan's party too. We are party monsters!

Here's one blog entry that doesn't talk specifically about her book but about a monologue from SNL: http://titsandsass.com/?p=1975#more-1975

But yeah, I just noticed a few instances of throwing around whore or hooker or whatever and making childish jokes about them. I know she probably doesn't think it means much, but it's just a little icky.

Unfortunately, I've been guilty of being shitty about acquaintances who are sex workers in the past, due to being insecure/judgey. I've definitely referred to one of my friends groups as being filled with "bisexual girls with drug problems, bad boundaries, and daddy issues" which includes a few people who are sex workers, but yeah, totally out of just me purely being mean, which isn't cool. I try to watch it and not be an ass. I definitely think it's shitty for comedians to make jokes about traditionally undervalued, underdog populations. That's not funny/comedy, it's just bullying.

I don't see it on the list here, but have you seen Shame? or have you heard anything about it first hand from anybody who has? If so would you recommend it? Also, see my most recent entry.

Have not seen it but I'd like to. It might be a rental for me though, since there's a bunch of movies in the theater that I'd rather see while they're still on the big screen! If you see it, I hope you write about it!

It looks like I'm going to it on Sunday. I will probably post an entry (which you will be privy to per usual) after I see it.
