on being un-writerly and the ethics of metaphor

i'm not a "lyricist", i'm a songwriter. i have very, very rarely written an entire song's lyrics without thinking hook at the same time. i don't know how people do it, but i know that they do. how you can take a fully solidifed page of words that has no melodic intention and then try to "set it to music" blows my mind ( Read more... )

music, dayjob, misery

i have no idea what you're talking about. just the other day i braved the freezing cold and wetness just to write in the snow on a park bench while wearing an alluring scarf and no one even looked twice at me. it was very disappointing. also i wrote this haiku:

the snow brings nothing.
no attention or romance.
only runny ink.

is jac a 4? perhaps hoping that said alluring scarf would invite rescue from mess of snow and runny ink? perhaps said rescuer would enjoy a small haiku of despair as repayment?

alone, and no moon.
wind shreds my heart like paper.
if only you'd come.

better me than you
feel this pain like tiger's teeth.
you should run from me.

i can't rival you at this. it is not possible for me to imitate those who despair in such a way. but. i can write bad riot grrrl songs that would rival it.

how's this:

run from me
cos i'm so scary
you want me not to be

but it's who i am
in my stained dress
virginglitterlightning

not for you
it's all mine
you can't have me
(never again)

really? alone, AND no moon? i can't think of anything sadder, jac.

i will come rescue you. where are you anyway? are you lost? would you rather give me directions by starlight?

i bet there are lots of 4s out there waiting to be rescued, but unable to provide suitable directions to their potential rescuers. just think of them, alone, and no moon, by the river. alone, and no moon, by the sea. alone, and no moon, in the park. it is so tragique.

Honestly i have never noticed anyone noticing me writing anything. I have noticed people noticing me doing things like a.wearing a skirt b.walking c.having scars d. texting someone.

Where did this particular rage bomb come from? Is this really such a thing? do I just not get out enough?

you *Know* what i'm talking about. writerly types wanting to be noticed being writerly? that cafe! jean-luc! etc.

I think you're underestimating the power of flavored coffee-beverage in that example. It had nothing to do with writers, but a lot to do with a. sweaters and b. nut flavored caffienated hot drinks.

as soon as i said it, i knew you would do this. it was a totally unrelated reference (unrelated EXCEPT for common denominator COFFEE) but it was funny. "writers" suck and you know it. they're on the train watching you watch them write The Great American Novel, etc. YOU KNOW WHO THEY ARE. Don't F with me.
