Re: death, 50 Cent wrote something interesting about 2Pac and death, "My favorite Tupac album is Makaveli. It was recorded after he was shot and spent time in prison. It was like a doctor told him he was going to die, and he was trying to get it all down on paper. That's something the average rapper just could not do: build an entire album around that concept, and stay in that negative space. Everybody knows that they're going to die. But after you're in a life-threatening situation, you think about it a little more."
Which reminds me of what Malcolm X said, "The price of freedom is death."
I think I need to spend the next year giving up fear.
ah did knowed thet about th Coup haha ah jest didn't know what th Zapatistas were ...
But so much of hip-hop is centered 'round death, what do you think distinguishes Makaveli from hundreds of other albums w/ tomorrow-ain't-promised-to-me worldviews
I can't believe Wikipedia doesn't have a 2Pac conspiracy theories articletrevitronMay 7 2008, 04:18:23 UTC
Well, I can definitely hear a lot of desperation in The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, but I guess Biggie did that two years earlier. I always thought "My life is played out like a jheri curl" was such a great line.
I mean, there's definitely a huge difference between even Me Against the World-era 2Pac and the Makaveli album, but I see your point. But I also think that, as much as people can feel like tomorrow isn't promise to them, they have a giant capacity to keep on surviving, which is also what a lot of hip-hop is about. With 2Pac--and I think you could say the same for Biggie--mere survival seemed hollow: it's almost like a tomorrow-ain't-promise-to-me-but-neither-is-today kind of worldview. Mobb Deep has always been pretty nihilistic, but Prodigy is still releasing albums on his way to prison for three years. And some of those songs are remotely hopeful!

as we discussed th other day, 2Pac is not hilarious whatsoever, so it makes sense that he would take Gloomy Sundayness in hip-hop to new heights !--mza.

dear cat,
Are you a cat? You are? Well den, I hope you don't misunderstand me when I say I want nothing to do w/ you. In a few moments, I will be signing this letter "W/ deepest seriousness, Kevin Shields" and I'll be done w/ you. Those will be th last words you will hear from me. Motherfuck. You ever step in my house, sniff my furniture, scratch any part of my wall-to-wall carpet, you will not hear words. You'll swim in yr own quivering, poopy entrails. Happy Earth Day, you dumb, dog-humping waste of fur.
