I now feel irrationally cross with ITV for not making this. I blame Thames TV.

 Yes! It is all Thames's fault for not making something I didn't think of until 2014! TV companies are so unreasonable.

:-D

It sounds like a sort of House Of Cards series, good casting choices BTW.

That was my reaction, too; when I read Standing between Hallam and his goals: several cabinet ministers and the Prime Minister himself. One by one, they'll fall..., I started hearing the House of Cards (UK) theme in my head.

I've never seen it, though, so it's not deliberate. I imagine this probably wouldn't be much like it, really, because I didn't think HoC ended with a (sort of) civil war and a dictatorship being established, but maybe it does.

♥ Thank you! I can always be there in a pinch with a gloomy invented 1970s TV show, I tell you. ;-p

Hooray! Although it's Network, so if it's due in December it'll actually come out next April. Worth waiting for though.

Terrific casting. I can really see Edward Woodward in the lead, being thoroughly ruthless. George Sewell is a nice touch too. Very much one of those solid and dependable types, and just right for a role like that.

But you're going to kill off Patrick Troughton, aren't you. Seventies TV is cruel...

Well, it was supposed to come out in April, maybe - whatever, I'm sure it's out soon!! :-)

I haven't seen Edward Woodward in very many things yet - mostly a couple when he's older & a couple of Liadt's Callan clips, but I bet he'd be brilliant. I hesitated, because it did seem like obvious casting, but... why not?

Oh, it doesn't start with murder. Hallam wants the gov't to put his plans in place first, then he wants to cause instability by discrediting the gov't, so it's character assassination not actual. One person definitely dies, but I should think Patrick lives to be arrested in the first wave of civil unrest and fighting following Hallam's take over. Whether or not he then spends most of his time under arrest or does get killed, I don't know. I think mainly under arrest. (But, yeah, 70s TV is cruel, definitely.)

I rather love Edward Woodward (especially the younger hotter version), and he would be terrifying as Hallam.

Is it all going to end with weddings, a conga, cake and a happy ending? I fear not. But I enjoy the bleakness!

I did hesitate over it for a moment, but it was just perfect once I'd thought of it. I've hardly seen him anything, but just enough to know he'd carry it off.

Yes, it is all going to end happily! It isn't the prequel to Heroes of the Revolution where everyone's been living in a dystopia for 30 years until Gemma Jones and Julian Glover turn up and kill off the older Hallam (who's strangely no longer Edward Woodward). There won't be cake, though. There's rationing and national crises going on. You can have fake tea and a slice of National Loaf?
