Spellworking may (or may not) be private. I tend to find it's not. My covenmates and I especially have lots of spells that we bandy about and join in on with each other.
But I tend to find the spell tech is best as a sort of open-source software. This probably comes out of my background as a chaos magickian, but I personally want to keep having that dialogue and keep working out the bugs. Things like the "No Fish Spell" are the process of years of co-creation and refinement that manage to get a lot of tech into a very simple and elegant package.
Of course, I also tend to talk a lot about those other things you're not supposed to discuss in polite company!
I've found that there's a curious attitude to spellworking in recaliming - at least in britain. There are those of us who do - and are apt to discuss creation, ingredients etc and ethics till the cows come home (or at least we get home) and then there are those - laregly but not exclusively comiing from the feminiest/healing activist background (and yes I am tarring many with my brush to whom this does not apply) who see spell work as somehow odd, and ethically iffy. Several expereinced members of the community have professed to never doing spell work, and to have no knowledge of it.
and then there's the attitude that spells are for teeny goth witches and not for 'proper witches'.
and then we could always start a spell- discussion community.....might be fun?!
That's interesting. I wasn't aware that some Reclaiming elders don't do spells. I must admit, the idea of witches who don't cast spells, or at least don't know how to do it, is very strange to me.
Lots of people seem to be interested in spellworking discussion, so I think I might just start a community! It would definitely be fun! (as long as I manage to keep spell beggars out, that is.)
How about a private LJ Spell-begging community for non-annoying witches? Anyone becomes an asshat, they get banned.
I like the hoodoo forums for intricate discussions where details are not frowned upon. You can't run in and beg a spell, but you can discuss what you have so far, ask for assistance in enhancements, and discuss disposal, ancestors, best experiences with that type of working, etc.
There are some yahoo groups with hoodoo as the focus. I've not looked here on lj for them.
