I don't think its necessarily pretentious in facyt I think it would be more pretentious for an artist to focus more on hirself than on hir art.
The thing is you can argue that everything boils down to self interest but that can't ever argue away a belief someone might hold to the contrary.
I also think that when you're really involved in the creative process you are lost in one of those brief ego-less moments. I see it as similar to gnosis. I don't see it as the best state for everything, but its every bit as crucial and important as our intellect, and rational self interest.
All these aspects of personality have a role and I think we become happier and more whole people when we allow all of them to work in concert.

I have no real issues with artists being ego centric either but
