I really despise the trend to explain away all suffering with metaphysics.
I don't believe in punishment for sin. Karma just means natural consequences.

Every human being, even Jesus and Buddha were motivated by self-interest. Human beings can never get rid of their egos. You can maybe let it go for short periods of time, but, never destroy it (unless you are putting a bullet in your head.) You need your ego to survive anyway why would you want to get rid of it?
