Tossing is exactly what it sounds like - tossing the camera while the shutter is open in order to capture unique and abstract images.

You will need:

• a camera or cameraphone (one that preferably has a strap)
• film (if using a print camera)

Do:

• Make sure the camera strap is secure.
• Set the camera to a slow shutter speed, using a low ISO to avoid noise, ( Read more... )

• Keep track of images you like or took yourself that could be used as inspiration for future work, as part of future work, or be the work. This can be done digitally, scrapbookily, or kept in a shoe box under the bed.
• Keep notes on photographic techniques and projects to try.

You will need:

• something to take pictures with
• a printer and paper

Do:

• Using methods like forced perspective, mirrors, optical illusions, juxtaposing items in unexpected places, etc., create surreal photos.
• Print the photos out - no need to use expensive printing processes or paper unless you want to - and post the images up in the place you took them.

Instead of putting your photograph in a traditional frame, you could mount it on a backing board of some kind, something of colour or patterned even, and ring the edges of the image with various kinds of ephemera - buttons, beads, various embellishments, keys, pressed flowers, your own doodles or patterns, etc.

You will need:

• Video camera or smartphone
• Basic video editing software
• A notebook for scripting, storyboarding, notes, and plans

Do:

• Create a script or storyboard for a mini-movie, documentary, or other short pieces.
• Film the piece, making use of related resources to learn about cinematography, direction, editing, and other needed skills as you go.

Take a photo of an ordinary object in an unusual setting. Using that as your focus, write a story about it, make a list, create a poem, come up with another creative project that centres it or that it’s a part of. You could even do a collection of photos of ordinary things in unusual places, or unusual things in ordinary ones.

You will need:

• photographs printed on thick paper
• embroidery floss in colours of your choosing
• embroidery needles
• scissors
• pencil

Take photos of things that look like each letter (and/or number) but aren’t - accidental wet marks, branches, placement of rocks, the way a plant stem curls, the shape of a cloud, the way something hangs - and so forth.

• Find enough to create your first name or that of a loved one and gift it to them.

I haven’t made any posts from these because they aren’t anything I have the knowledge or skill to detail in any way. Some of these are photographic, image manipulation, and printmaking techniques that are going to require a little more information, equipment, or space than the average project makes use of. • drawing materials - pens, coloured pencils, markers

Do:

• Colour, write, or draw directly on an image.

Notes:

• Use quotations, aphorisms, single words, patterns, doodles, full drawings, etc.
• Using text that doesn’t match the image would add interest and subvert expectations.
