Arrivederci

It’s almost exactly two years since I got back from a year in Vietnam, and now I’m off again. Just for six months this time, to Italy -- more specifically the capital of Sardinia, Cagliari. It looks beautiful, full of history, and there’s a beach. Plus Italian seems like it will be much easier than Vietnamese was :) So yeah, should be fun! And I’ll ( Read more... )

Congratulations on the job. Italy sounds lovely. Pasta! Wine! and a beach!

AND prehistoric ruins and hiking and pizza! And I bet the students will be fun, even if I'll be teaching a lot of teenagers who're about to take an exam I find stupid. (Much less fulfilling than teaching an exam which tests skills usefully!)

FUCK YEAH JOB! And Italy!

I've only been to Rome and Naples for a study trip (and the countryside in between thanks to a train window) but it's pretty beautiful.

If you want to attempt learning Italian before you go I recommend Duolingo which is both an app and a website. I use it for French and now Spanish and some of the things it teaches you are a bit odd but it's good for basics. The only annoying thing is being unable to skip forwards to useful things you might need (like directions). It also has a (very cheesy) flirting module you can buy for each language.

FUCK YEAH indeed!!

I went to Italy for a week when I was 10 and 12, and I really loved it. I'm really excited.

Thanks!! I tried Duolingo yesterday and the website didn't seem to work but that might be because my computer was struggling with a Windows 7 -> 10 upgrade. I MUST PRACTICE BEFORE I GO.

I was there for two weeks during my second year of undergrad and I soooo want to go back.

Ah, yeah, Duo can be damn slow if your computer has anything else going on. Oh and the 'buying' module thing isn't a paid for thing, it's with the lingot tokens you earn through practice. If you have a phone that can do apps that includes and option for speech practice too. If not just speaking all the website stuff aloud works too!

I'm 8 days in!! I definitely think it'll be helpful when I go :) If nothing else because it's reassuring how similar Italian and English are!

Thanks!

Ooh, I could do that! And it'd be nice, I'm too unemployed for international Christmas cards this year and it makes me sad.
