Act 6. Library Aid.

Apr 13, 2009 21:15

[Ren was busy reshelving. It was a daunting task, what with the neverending influx of new books. Not to mention the residents who actually made use of the building - those books that were returned needed reshelving, too, as well as any that got misplaced or left somewhere at random and forgotten ( Read more... )

I don't know where they all came from initially, but I'm certainly not complaining! I'll never be bored this way, whether I'm working or not! It's wonderful!

[Note: Ren is being just a little sarcastic here. He likes books well enough, but you won't find him fanboying over them.]

Yes. I suppose it is wonderful in its own way Miss Yomiko. [And he'll keep using "miss" every so often.]

Not to mention it serves as an excellent distraction. Who could possibly concern themselves too much about their forgotten pasts and missing memories when there's so much here to read?

Why, there's such a huge selection, you could grab a novel or ten and simply become the main character if you wanted. Nobody could stop you.

[Ren returns another book to it's proper place, only allowing himself to frown after his back is momentarily turned towards her. When his work on that book is done, the frown is gone again, but so is the hint of sarcasm.]

You must really love books. I don't think I've seen anyone enter this building with quite as much passion for literature as you have just displayed.

W-well, yes I do love books... and I suppose I do use them as an escape when thining about unpleasant things makes me sad. I don't think I've ever put myself in the shoes of a character though. I simply envy them as an observer... *sheepish laugh* I suppose you're better suited to being a lead character then I.

I guess I'm just a bit strange... Is there another profession you'd prefer to do over being a librarian aid, Ren?

I think anyone can be a leading character, since everyone has his or her own story to tell. We are all living a unique life - and it's life that books are based off of. Am I right about that?

Also, there's nothing at all wrong with loving books. I see no harm in that.

You're not strange, either, Miss Yomiko. I've met truly strange people already, and you're somewhere near the opposite end of the spectrum. You, after all, don't prattle on about ghosts.

Hrm. I am not entirely sure. Miss Erk seems to believe I should look into acting.

I wouldn't consider that a downside, personally, but then I enjoy what I do.

What would you prefer doing, then?

Hrm...

[Ren ponders this for a moment.]

I'm not entirely sure, though I must confess the idea of becoming a character from a piece of literature - as I just mentioned to Miss Yomiko - is somewhat appealing.

I have no real grasp of my own identity; borrowing someone else's might be interesting to try.

I suppose I enjoy the reading more than the shelving. The characters themselves are quite intriguing, the book covers not so much.

[Erk took another book off the cart, eyes glancing along the shelves to see where it would go.]

Borrowing someone else's identity without one of your own... maybe this island was perfect for you. I'm not sure I could manage something like that.

I've looked at the coliseum before. They have an acting troupe there; perhaps that might interest you more than shelving books.

[Ren resumed his work, sticking with shelving the books that belonged on the upper levels of the bookcases.]

Don't get me wrong, though. I'd much rather know who I am than not. I am just a little surprised that I'm not as concerned about it as I thought I would be. Maybe I've just been too distracted by this place. First it tries to freeze me, then it decides to make a day disappear. It's not a very conductive environment.

Acting, hrm? I'm not sure if I'm suited for something like that. I imagine it requires talent. Though... I do recall that guy posting those gaudy posters around town. I believe he was recruiting cast and crew for his play or what he called a play. It sounded ridiculous, but I did get the feeling that I didn't want the production to be a complete disgrace.

Some of us have speculated that they initially come from the different worlds we hail from, though we really have no way of knowing. New books come in at a surprisingly fast rate.

Are you a librarian aid?

Hrm. An interesting theory...
That would explain why they appear so frequently, if nothing else. I've also thought it rather odd that I can read all of the books here, even though they don't all seem to be from the same place. Do you suppose some sort of translation system's been put into effect on this island...

Yes, I am. Did you need help with something?

That seems to be the case. With this number of people from different worlds, we can assume different languages are somehow translated for everyone to understand. Otherwise we would have no means of proper communication.

Ah, no. I happen to be a librarian aid as well.

[He nods acceptance of this theory.] I suppose it must be so, although it's difficult for me to wrap my brain around everything I've seen and heard the past few weeks.

Ah, I see. I apologize for not having familiarized myself with my coworkers beforehand.

My name is Ren. You may refer to me however you like.

I think working in the library would be interesting! Though my job keeps me busy and is also very enjoyable.

I wonder, have you seem any new books about magic recently, by any chance?

lme_leadingman April 15 2009, 00:55:05 UTC
[And here was another person who actually seemed to accept the supernatural. If it wasn't talk of ghosts and fairies, it was magic itself. Ren was beginning to think he was the only nonbeliever.]

Somehow I don't think you mean street tricks...

Pardon me for asking, Miss, but do you really believe in magic, and if so, why do you? It seems like it's a popular topic for discussion on this island. I'll admit there are plenty of strange happenings and oddities around this place, but...

[He added, because she had asked, and it was his job to assist library visitors:]

I saw a large collection of them near the back window. The shelf was the second on the right, just past a group study table. I'm not sure if any of them are particularly new or not, however.

I do believe in magic, yes. I have more than enough reason to. Even before I remembered some spells, I always knew that magic was real. Why, don't you agree?

Ah, I see. Thank you. I believe I've been through all of those already, but I'll take a look anyway.

[Ren answered honestly.] I suppose I find it difficult to invest trust in something that I haven't witnessed firsthand. If I believed in every uncertainty in this world without putting them to the test first, I'd prove gullible.

As I said before, I am not entirely sure how new any of the books on that shelf are. You might try asking Miss Erk. Somehow I feel she'd be more knowledgeable on the subject than I am.

[Elsewhere in the library, Haruko can be found taking books off of shelves for no clear reason.]

[Give him a few minutes, maybe half an hour.]

[Peers around a bookshelf.]

What. Are. You. Doing?

I just straightened this area an hour ago.

New section library chief reporting in!

You have these books filed under the old dewey decimal system. You need to get them in line with the new standards.

lme_leadingman April 15 2009, 23:31:07 UTC
If there's a new Dewey Decimal system, then I've heard nothing of it. You'll have to take that up with the people in charge, Miss. Changing everything by yourself would only create a huge mess, and none of the other librarian aids seem to be aware of this situation either.
