Act 6. Library Aid.

Apr 13, 2009 21:15

[Ren was busy reshelving. It was a daunting task, what with the neverending influx of new books. Not to mention the residents who actually made use of the building - those books that were returned needed reshelving, too, as well as any that got misplaced or left somewhere at random and forgotten ( Read more... )

Some of us have speculated that they initially come from the different worlds we hail from, though we really have no way of knowing. New books come in at a surprisingly fast rate.

Are you a librarian aid?

Hrm. An interesting theory...
That would explain why they appear so frequently, if nothing else. I've also thought it rather odd that I can read all of the books here, even though they don't all seem to be from the same place. Do you suppose some sort of translation system's been put into effect on this island...

Yes, I am. Did you need help with something?

That seems to be the case. With this number of people from different worlds, we can assume different languages are somehow translated for everyone to understand. Otherwise we would have no means of proper communication.

Ah, no. I happen to be a librarian aid as well.

[He nods acceptance of this theory.] I suppose it must be so, although it's difficult for me to wrap my brain around everything I've seen and heard the past few weeks.

Ah, I see. I apologize for not having familiarized myself with my coworkers beforehand.

My name is Ren. You may refer to me however you like.

Yes, Memento Eden functions strangely. It's very unusual and difficult to fully understand because of it . . .

There's no need to apologize. I admit I haven't been familiarizing myself with the other aids as of late.

Ren. My name is Izuru.

Izuru. [Ren offers a hand to shake.]

Yes, this place is most unusual. Have you been on this island for very long?

[He gingerly takes the hand and shakes it.]

For a while. It's been about nine months since I came here.

[Shake.]

That's a pretty long time to be stuck here.
I wonder if anyone has ever tried to escape the island. A raft or something, perhaps? Or flying?

The more I look at the situation, the less likely it seems that I will ever be permitted to leave.

Ah, others have been here much longer.
I'm certain an attempt or two has been made. Not everyone here is passive. They would have already tried something, and the Island appears to be inescapable.

Maybe we will, once we regain all of our memories.

But nobody seems to remember anyone who has successfully recalled everything.

At least of the few people I have asked.

Maybe nobody ever does.

Remember can be a very long process. A year in this place and we wouldn't have remembered everything yet. It's a long wait and possibly why no one knows or recalls anyone who has.

[A pause.] I like to think we'll be able to leave in the future.

I guess.

I've also heard that some people have disappeared. Maybe those people who disappeared know things that we are no longer aware of, too.

Mhm. I'd like to think so myself, but the track record...
