That is one hell of a heavy car. It weighs over a ton and a half (base), though I don't know what your planned modifications would do to lighten the load. However, it also, again unmodified, only gets 13-15 mpg (my dad had a 67 Charger, and he always says it would go past everything except a gas station). But what feels off about it to me, as you describe it, is that anything he can do to bump up the fuel volume is going to add to the weight significantly, and anything he can do to lighten the load isn't going to do serious damage to the weight, given that it's made out of steel and much of the weight is actually the car, not the engine or the like. Though if you haven't found it yet, look for the restomod groups; there are a lot of them that work with Mustangs, and they may do things that lighten the car and make it better for your purposes. I know a fairly common mod is to give it an electric engine, but I don't know what that does to the torque and the speed ( ... )

Good points, all of them

for weight, I have him lightening and changing the bodywork from steel to titanium, aluminiam and corbon fibre, the chassis getting strengthened as well.

MPG there are a variety of different aftermarket things you can do, and I'm going to have him replace the exhaust set, refine intake systems and hopefully I'll find a way to increase tank size without adding too much weight. The 2013 engine should give about 23 mpg basic, and with the mods should reach a decent total. Also, I've got his one custom-set for a 6-speed manual trans, and a properly set up manual will gain almost 5 mpg over an automatic.

It doesn't have to be not-super-distinctive, I mean you could have a host of cars used for subtelty, but a zonda isn't suitable for in-town driving, which is what most of this would be.

Hm. If you're having him do that much work to it, then this isn't about owning a GT500, per se, but something shaped like one. There are definitely fiberglass repros of the body shell of the non-Shelby classic Mustangs, and I wonder if that would help? Not, of course, if he's going to get in any kind of serious car accident, but you could go that direction if you care more about light and responsive than about "omg an actual GT500", which is a beautiful car, but my heart lies with the 1969 Mach 1 ( ... )

I think a big question is, where is he being chased? Do you want something with maneuverability for in-city driving, something that can go all-terrain if you're fleeing on back-roads, or best speed on a freeway.

How does he feel about motorcycles?

owns 3 (BMW K1300R, Ducati Multistrada, Triumph 675 Daytona R) , but you can't carry much gear on a motorbike, not compared to a car. Also if you want to sit and wait for a long period of time, a bike aint so comfy.

The idea was to kit the car out with a fly-by-wire system similar to the Ducati Multistrada, so it raises the ride height and changes the gear ratios ever so slightly, along with allowing the driver access to nitro (if I decide to put that in)

Something less memorable would probably be a better bet; unless he's officially sanctioned in some way, having everyone saying things like "the monster was chasing a Shelby GT500, maybe the driver knows where it went" won't be very helpful.

a) not technically official, but did work for a "Callan"-type section of the government for a while (dealing with the supernatural ofc), and as such still has the badge to pull out if he needs speeding tickets, fines, reports etc to just go away.

Also, he has a bunch of cars he can use if he needs to be subtle, he tends to buy them from used-car lots, like Drive. So he has a bunch of those, but the shelby is his baby, he's had it a long time and has been modifying and upgrading her the whole way.

I have no opinion one way or another about cars, but it is always exciting to see an unexpected Callan reference.

Also UK native :D

They're nice, but I've never really liked them. They always seem to get a rep for being a wankers car somehow, not sure how. Plus, they don't age as well as classic muscle cars. Part of the point is that this is more than just a car, it's HIS car, and he's had it for a long time. A shiny modern one just wouldn't have the same baggage.

Also, it doesn't really fit the image. It's a rather noir style of book, and the older car is perfect for that. It's distinctive but not memorable, it's a little older and from the outside you'd never know how fast she can move, or how quick she is on the turns. It's a bit of a mirror for my character, he's not a classical hero type, he's a bit battered, he's good-looking but not supermodel/movie star, he just looks like a normla guy in good shape. OF course he's actually easily capable of throwing a grown man with one arm, but it's not apparent. Just like the car.

To be honest that would be my choice, but I'm a Shelby girl. But realize that was "Eleanor." (Although if that is what you have pictured, "she" isn't standard, well they built i think about 400 after the movie, but the original 67 is shaped differently.)

Yeah, I know eleanor isn't standard. It's the original layout, but basically the styling is the only thing truly original about it. Everything else has been changed around, possibly several times.
