the first thing to strike me (hurr hurr pun) is that for marking without severe injury, the best place to look would be in the BDSM community.

the most famous type of whip used for corporeal punishment is probably the cat o' nine tails: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_o'_nine_tails

other terms that would probably get you more productive results than "whipping" are "flogging" and "caning." in addition, it was part of the point of the act that it would tear you up and leave a mark, and inspire fear in others.

Fetlife.com would be an excellent resource for you. You have to join [for free] but they have communities which are goldmines of information and most members are more than happy to help interested newbies. Collarchat.com is also a forum [offshoot of collarme.com] which can be helpful but tends to veer towards a bit more wanky attitude at times, imo.

Singapore was in the (US) news a while back because of its use of caning as criminal punishment:

Oh, then there's also edwordm's comment 2 threads down. It's an avatar of the "thanks for sharing" bot (and a c/p of your own reply). Those comments always have a transparent gif hosted on some imgshine or talentkid website.

Yup, they've taken to copy-pasting fragments of others' comments or posts now. It's a bit like watching sped-up evolution processes. I wonder when they'll realise that having a userpic would really be adding to their credibility.
