WGA strike

I feel like an idiot for not realizing until this week that the writers of my favorite shows don't get paid when I watch their shows online.  That they would get residuals when the show airs on network television, but not when the network chooses to stream the show on their website is mind-boggling to me.  I do support the writers with their strike ( Read more... )

I definitely agree. What's amazing to me is that the networks make money off of the online shows by selling ad space, yet they don't funnel any of that money to the people who originally provided the content. Just amazing; no wonder the WGA is striking.

That's a fine WGA support vid that you picked, Lisibee. I like it.

I was thinking about posting a blank page today, but you know, um, maybe next week.

Thanks for the mention; it really is an important issue for bloggers and social network members to consider.

All my best,
Rich

Rich, I'm glad you didn't mind that I quoted your blog. And I agree, it's definitely something that people who blog and journal online need to realize. People assume that because they wrote something, then they own it, regardless of what platform they use. I know that I assumed that, before I read your piece.

Well that IS interesting, LisiBee. I had heard that the writers got no residuals for the online viewing and downloading. The networks make us watch ads before viewing - they would never think of just GIVING it to us, for FREE, yet they expect the writers, who actually CREATE the content people are paying money for, to let the networks have it for free. And it's not just a matter of "now" online viewing is a lot more popular - were it only ONE person, the writer deserves compensation - it was the WRITER who motivated the viewer to cough over his hard-earned dollars ( ... )
