Serbia have turned up on stage with half an orchestra to sing a perfectly pleasant torch song. Zeljko Joksimovic has a nice voice, and there's nothing essentially wrong with this song, but it's not truly exciting. Nije Ljubav Stvar is sung in Serbian, hurrah.

Now we have Spain, singing very prettily in Spanish. She has a very nice voice, with a balance of power and lightness, and although it's yet another ballad it's clearly the best yet. OK, this is important because SWEDEN are on stage now and I am representing Sweden tonight by dint of wearing blue and yellow and drinking schnapps. So this had better be good. Azerbaijan's entry this year is sung by a woman in blue feathers. God, the number of drawn-out heartbroken ballads this year is making me long for the Russian grannies. Estonia have arrived with yet another sodding piano ballad, one that caused Terrie and I to spontaneously burst into a sofa performance of Nilssen's Without You. He looks a bit like Ronan Keting, he has a nice voice with a good range, but really we are all so very over ballads here. An enjoyable opening from Azerbaijan - nice dancing, crazy flashing dancefloor. And the hosts are all dressed in white! Special. I cannot believe they purpose-built a venue for this shindig. Have they not heard of the Athens Olympics?
