I was going to see the John Singer Sargent watercolor exhibit again this morning, but I spent the morning writing a letter of reference instead.  I will try to make it before Saturday, however, as I expect it will be mobbed on the last weekend of the exhibit.

It has been a really terrible heat wave this last week, but I have gotten through it so far with minimal damage.  Leaving the apartment to seek places with air conditioning has helped!  Today is supposed to be the last day of temperatures in the 90's, so here's hoping.  I've already gone to the farmers market, in a little while I'll go to the ( Read more... )

Saw another movie today -- I love going to weekday matinees!  I saw "20 Feet from Stardom" and it was just magnificent.  It's a documentary about backup singers from the 60's through the present day, following the careers of several women and with interviews with Mick Jagger, Sting, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen.  The historical footage was ( Read more... )

Realizing I've read 12 books in 3 weeks -- and have others I'm midway through -- no wonder I'm a little sick of reading.  Four books a week is a lot.  I'm sure I've read more than that -- if you really don't do anything else, you can read a book a day or more! -- but it really is time for those other projects.  I need to get back in the groove with ( Read more... )

Notable events:  Yesterday I was in Purl Soho, where they have a lovely collection of Liberty cotton lawns... at $36/ yard.  There were two women buying cuts of at LEAST 10 different prints, and they had a stack of pre-cut quarter or half-yard pieces as well, which don't go for much of a discount.  I would guess they spend at least $200-$300 on ( Read more... )

Hallo.  I have eight seven days of teaching left, though I'll be working till the end of June.  I'm kind of ready for a break, but I'll also miss the routine of it.  I'm looking forward to getting ready for next year.

Cold Fire by Kate Elliot: Good, with some great bits.  Looking forward to the third book.  It seems as if Elliot is more or less letting the characters take her where they will, within an outline with pretty large parameters.  This also bugged me in the Crown of Stars series, but this world is waaaaay better, and the characters are better too.  I ( Read more... )
