"1984" так и не прочел, хотя по цитатам уже могу собрать большую часть романа. Когда-то писал роман "1985" :)

They would be happy to have this level of indoctrination, but I doubt they can achieve it. Haven't seen much evidence yet, and from my common sense they're just nor charismatic enough for it. Also there was a lot of incorporating of the thieves' morale into the discourse, and the thieves' morale definitely does not encourage being the regime's faithful dogs. (Both arguments sound rather weak, admittedly. Sure, I have a hard time envisioning people honestly supporting the regime rather than going on about terrible Ukrainians/USA that need to be stopped, but I had a hard time envisioning a lot of people going as far as they did.)

by some accounts, they are already achieving certain results in this. I'm not sure the thieves' mindset is emphasized when children are concerned, it's more about drilling and yelling. But I won't mind being wrong about the scale of indoctrination, of course. I was indoctrinated myself as a child, but I very quicky exdoctrinated out of it.

Should be hard to indoctrinate children without consistent ideology and values (which the Soviet Union did have, even if it was all hypocrisy). By no means impossible, but expecting Russian education to produce "good" results (as measured against their intentions) isn't my null hypothesis.
