Perhaps having something as horrible as apartheid happening so recently in their history makes them more sensitive to keeping legalized discrimination out of their country? If only we could manage such an about-face here.

That may be it. I notice the Church wasn't that happy with it there, either... but they apparently don't have the power they have here. Which makes sense.

I think your reason is probably why equal rights for gays and lesbians was written into their constitution. And then once that was there, the court pretty much had to do what it did. Even with the Supreme Court we have right now, if equal rights for gays and lesbians was part of our constitution, I think they would have ruled the same way, if not so unanimously. In our country, sexual orientation and gender identity aren't even protected categories in discrimination laws in many states, let alone at the federal level or in the constitution.

They went from being one of the most fucked up countries 30 years ago, to this. They make us look like wankers.

That they do. Of course, they still have boatloads of social problems, but they're moving in the right direction on many fronts. It's more than I can say for this country, unfortunately.
