My daughter (my seventeen year old daughter) came home tonight drunk. Not tipsy, not slightly inebriated - royally pissed. And on a school night, no less! Sure, it's summer, but she has summer... things... she goes to, right? So it's still functionally a school night!

And of course somehow I'm the one who ends up sleeping on the sofa (which is why ( Read more... )

I find it interesting that despite your obvious upset at the situation, you don't seem to be issuing any punishment. Most parents on my watch list would be promising that their wayward teen shall be grounded until they're whatever completely unreasonable age by the end of their post.

That comes in the morning. Currently it's ensure-lack-of-alcohol-poisoning but don't you worry; come six it'll be get-up-so-you-can-clean-up-your-mess-from-the-night-before-and-take-your-siblings-out-to-breakfast-then-to-the-zoo-for-the-day-while-your-parents-have-a-nice-quiet-day-doing-whatever-they-want-in-a-clean-house-without-five-children-in-it. I'm quite looking forward to that, actually...

I see. I suppose it's meant to be one of those cases of punishment in lieu of a life lesson sort of situations?

Haven't you ever been hungover? Four yelling siblings at a zoo full of other yelling kids and strange animal smells and cheap, greasy food... yeah, that's punishment enough, I think. That and the cleaning.

Me either. I tried to help but when she started in about her mate's pregnancy scare? Yeah, I'm not old enough for that...

Why should it matter? It's not as though it were your daughter who might have been pregnant.

Because I remember them running around in tutus at the age of three going on about riding unicorns and marrying princes and if her mate's at that stage, who's to say my Ellie's not as well?

But seriously

If you're there for her and use that nifty punishment, I'm betting it'll all work out

We're hoping so. She's a good kid, so we've high hopes this is more just a... experimental thing, you know? Now my next one, he'll be a different story - three years younger and already acting out worse than she's ever done...

You should have seen Mum's face the first time I stumbled in at two am and threw up in the kitchen sink.

They didn't believe I had food poisoning and made me clean the entire kitchen and mow the lawn the next day.

And I turned out fine. :p Don't worry, it's definitely a phase. She seems like a sensible kid. :)

She'll at least learn to hide it better...

She is. Usually. It's just experimenting, I'm sure, but it makes me regret putting my own mum through this sort of thing!

I was listening to Gary talking about his eldest boy and considering calling my mother to apologise.

I suppose it's karmic revenge...

Well, the clinic's always open for you and yours in case something goes... wrong... You know that, right?

Thanks for that. She was all right in the end, though we received no less than a dozen "can I PLEASE take them home and SLEEP?!" texts from her this morning. We let her off the hook at around three at which they came back and she disappeared into her room to sleep until dinner so I think that's lesson learned. Hopefully!
