If I Just Lay Here

[+] Okay. I’m going to jump right into a cut. Because I have a feeling that a lot of what I’m going to say is going to be controversial. But if you are still curious about my thoughts on Derek Shepherd (and there are going to be callbacks to quite a few other Grey’s characters, and mentions of other shows), I need to stress: this is my opinion, in ( Read more... )

It's seriously beautiful, yes?

I never cared too much about Mer-Der one way or another even when I watched the show, but there is something painfully universal about death--about the fact that we'll all face it at some point--losing someone we love and going out ourselves.

And when death is done right on television, perhaps the humanity of us all expands a bit. The best art should speak to us, clue us in to the big picture and make us feel...all the emotions, not one singular thing.

That final video made me feel that.

MerDer were never my biggest thing with the show either (though I grew to really love them more and more after you left the show, because the ups and downs of a life commitment is fascinating).

But it really was a perfect, stellar death. And I just finished 2.21 (of TVD) and Jenna and John's death...are really, really sad. But these I see more from a production perspective, and these two felt more like just cleaning house for an overstuffed cast (John got a slightly better death, but still).

Well, of course, we didn't have 11 years with John and Jenna, but they were characters who were developed well enough (and played by just the right actors) that it still mattered. Not like losing Derek, of course, but still important to the overall fabric of the show. I mean, I just could never forgive Klaus for Jenna; of all he ever does, that's the one thing that never goes away for me.

Is it strange to be *proud* of a fictional character? I don’t know if that’s the right word. But I am in awe of Meredith Grey. She can live without Derek, but she doesn’t want to. But she will. The carousel never stops turning.

No truer words could be said.

Agree with every word you just wrote.

Realistically, I think killing off Derek was the only way to go; anything else would have been a total cop-out.

Like, really thinking about it from every other angle, I agree. Commuter marriage would be hollow. Divorcing them WOULD be a total slap in the face. Glorious death. Glorious death every time.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write this post. A lot of people have been shocked by what happened, myself included, but I didn't think of it from your point of view and it makes sense. I knew Patrick Dempsey wanted to leave and this way he got a hell of a goodbye. Not everyone will be happy about it, but it was a beautiful death and holy crap Ellen Pompeo knocked that performance out of the fucking park.

I still don't really know how the show is going to continue without him though, but I'll still be watching to find out.

I think the show has become enough of an ensemble that it could survive without any one character (though the further we get away from the original cast, the more different the show has become from the beginning). But even so. This was HUGE.
