Fixed my conference paper topic so that it's on LGBTQ representation in graphic novels, how to integrate such material into the collection, and how to deal with challenges.  (HINT:  don't automatically put all graphic novels in the YA and Juvenile sections; not all picture books are for kids.  Do your research, catalogers.)

Went to Lauren Myracle's talk.  Not sure what I was expecting, but she was funny, articulate, and very sweet.  She read a selection of e-mails she's received over the years, mostly from the would-be censors and shocked parents.  She made some good points about why people feel compelled to censor, and how to respond to those who are at least up- ( Read more... )

The more I read, the more interested I am in YA lit.  Not to the point where I think I want to go into child or teen services, but enough to make being a public librarian look more and more appealing.  I really think I might get in touch with my adviser and see about changing my concentration from academic to public ( Read more... )

Doing my research proposal for 550 on censorship.  Haven't narrowed the topic down any further than that; probably censorship and YA collections since that seems to be both the most heavily studied and controversial area, plus I'll be able to draw in some stuff on graphic novels without scraping around for sources (since there aren't many).  but ( Read more... )

Should be doing my class blog entries for 500 and 504.  To be fair to myself, though, I did spend the afternoon hunting the articles I'm going to use.  Why are so few lib sci articles available as full-text?  Why have I had better luck using the Colorado State databases to find material (CSU has no lib sci program) than I've had with Clarion's?
